My entry for the Random Set-up Tables challenge.

My original idea was rather cheese, involving Capitaine Baudouin Deleflote on the Le Coeur du Lion and a 6 point corsair. However I decided at the last minute to change it to it's current set up.

Ship one of potentially 6(more on that later), the mighty, only thrice used Salem.
Coming aboard from Savage Shores is Captain Charles Richard, the only crew with that ability and a point cost. XD Next up, and integral to this fleet's success is Captain Montana Mays who links to all American ships and therefore does not take up cargo space. I think. With him aboard, the Salem will hopefully get his SAT as often as possible to move along at S+S+S+S. Decently quick to avoid trouble (probably) and get to an island to grab a few goodies.

Now where you ask, is the rest of the fleet, the Lord Sentinel mentioned another five ships, where are they? What could they be? The Salem is 8 points, the maximum allowed for the challenge, so how could more ships be added, especially since those +5 crew are banned? The answer lies with a single UT, Drum-roll please..........

Kraken Gong!!!!

Should this UT be found by the Lord Sentinel, it would allow me to place arguably one of the most powerful Sea Creatures ever conceived by wizkids on the ocean, within easy encircling distance of an enemy ship! Since there are a total of 5 krakens in the game (The 4 DpoC ones and Terrox), the fleet of the Lord Sentinel can at maximum be 6 ships, 5 of which should make easy work of whatever little ships I come across!

But wait, surely this cannot be legal? It is, for this challenge, which only restricts how many points we have to spend on ships and crew at the BEGINNING of the game. Once the game starts, anything goes!

Other UT's included are:
Cannibals-- Formerly Fruit, since my crew cannot be eliminated, this one won't hurt me at all but should seriously dent my opponents ships.
Curse of the Black Spot -- Formerly Natives, this one follows the same principle as the above.
Pandora's Box-- If I found this one, I'd have an interesting time choosing a UT to place. I could use it to bring in some Abandoned Crew, most likely a helmsman. Or I could use it to bring in a UT with a gold value. Lastly if I haven't found Kraken Gong yet, I can use this to expedite the process. Conversely, if my opponent were to find it I'd hit them with Runes of Death or some such thing......
Plague-- Did I mention I was ? Again, hopefully I don't find this one.

Drawbacks:
One ship fleets are uncommon for a reason, and it's that a one ship fleet usually cannot compete with fleets of even two or three ships, even if that fleet includes the Kraken Gong....

My entire strategy is dependent on finding the Kraken Gong first, and using the Krakens to hunt the enemy ships while the Salem gathers gold. Should an opponent find the Gong it will likely be game over for me, for even with Mays's SAT, the Salem can eliminate 4 tentacles AT MOST, and Krakens have 8......

Furthermore, my strategy revolves around Montana May's succeeding with his Same Action Twice as often as possible to help speed the Salem along, since there was no room for an helmsman or explorer.

If I find ANY of the UT's I placed other than KG and Pandora's Box, my fleet will be severely hampered if not downright doomed.

I could go on, but the rest of the drawbacks I see are the usual small fleet drawbacks like Certain UT's and getting out performed by a fleet of two or three ships.

This was a fun challenge, and as I mentioned earlier, I had a completely different fleet, until at the last minute I decided I wanted to go a different direction. To demonstrate how last minute this was, I didn't even HAVE the Kraken Gong in the fleet until I went to add the UT's and came across it in the gallery. Initially I decided it would be a fun thing to do, but I quickly realized that the UT was a way to get some serious fire-power at no cost! Thus I made it a part of my core strategy, and I may formulate a fleet in the near future that revolves around finding and using this UT as often as possible.

Anywho, I've rambled on long enough, please vote and comment with questions or concerns.

I think underestimate your own fleet's potential. Some negative UT choices could help you immensely, namely Plague and some you may want to add instead of the others. Don't forget about Mays' second ability: "This ship's crew cannot be eliminated unless she sinks." I think you should swap out Natives and Fruit for Cannibals and/or Curse of the Black Spot . Thus using Mays to your greatest advantage an avoiding some of the danger when exploring. (I was going to say Missionary but it says removed not eliminated - how obnoxious! XD)

I will say, I like the thought of a second Kraken Gong showing up via Pandora's Box. Decidedly evil, but in an intriguing way that I may have to try sometime. Also, a player getting the Gong still has to use it effectively; it's entirely possible that it could be discovered early and not roll 6's for the (short in this case, most likely) whole game. I do like your way around the miniscule build total, and your perfect usage of the two crew. Bring in up to 40 tentacles at no cost! XD Mays protects the crew from the UT's (hopefully the optimal ones if you want to change it!), and gives the Salem fair firepower and speed considering the restrictions.

Also, it was submitted before you signed up for an account here, but you may want to check out my Kraken Gong gimmick fleet sometime.

PS: Forgot to mention, the Salem is one of my favorite ships that's never talked about, so I'm glad you used her here. Not a great ship, but definitely underrated and a nice option to have!

I think I saw that fleet at one time but I can't recall when..... Anyway, fleets like that are why I said I might make a fleet about the Kraken Gong.

On the UT's,
I can add them, and swap them for a couple of the ones I have currently listed.

----------Added the suggested UT's. Thought about including Rats and Runes of Death but decided that there were enough negative UT's already.------------
