Fleet "Ships of Trafalgar" - 184 Points (standard format) show extended format
created by danomight

The Battle of Trafalgar, fought on 21 October 1805, was the most significant naval battle of the Napoleonic Wars and the pivotal naval battle of the 19th century. A Royal Navy fleet of 27 ships of the line destroyed an allied French and Spanish fleet of 33 ships of the line west of Cape Trafalgar in south-west Spain. The French and Spanish lost 22 ships; the British none. The British commander Admiral Lord Nelson died late in the battle, by which time he had ensured his place as Britain's greatest naval hero.

The British victory spectacularly confirmed the naval supremacy that Britain had established through the eighteenth century. After the battle, the Royal Navy remained unchallenged as the world's foremost naval power until the rise of Imperial Germany prior to the First World War, 100 years later. However, by the time it was fought, Napoleon had decided to abandon his plans to invade southern England and instead was successfully conducting military operations in Germany against Britain's continental allies.

It is not surprising, given the significance of this battle, that Wizkids based many ships on those that fought so gallantly at Trafalgar. Scroll down to view Pirates! versions of some of the most magnificent battleships ever to sail the seven seas!

I'm interested in setting up a game using the Pirate ships but, of course, not all the ships that were present are in the Pirate range. Also - HMS Swiftsure in the Pirate range looks more like a rate 7 or 8 scoop compared to the rate 3 that it was in the battle. I think the name of the ship will not be of importance for me - i'll just mount the ships on clear plastic with the name of the ship - that way I can use duplicates and some of the pirate ships (saving up flags from duplicates.

Just to add that El Neptuno and Santa Ana have also been added to the list. But I think that the lack of accuracy from Wizkids means that the ships can't really be used games if you want authenticity but using ships from this range and not worry about the names on the ships themselves could be a good and cheap way forward for people wanting to use Pirates miniatures for wargaming.

La Corse (3-masted from South China Seas and 4-Masted French ship from Davy Jones set) mentions Trafalgar in the flavor text. I believe it is the only ship that does so. So which is it, a 3-master or a 4-master?

Cool. You actually could revise this and find and include many more ships with the same names as the battle counterparts.

F&S Thomas Gunn makes a good Nelson too.
