Hardly a surprise, I'm sure, but I decided to use a variation of one of my UPS fleets. I've been futzing around with this thing for a week, and it's not what I'd call perfect but what the heck.

First things first, take a look at my opponent's fleet, and since we're all nation-pure, use the Hag to bring in 5 points based on what my opponent has brought to the table. If it's a non-Pirate or non-Cursed fleet, then substitute in the correct Letter of Marque. If my opponent hasn't brought any events, then trade in Favor of the Gods to either upgrade the Letter of Marque to Damsel in Distress or consider bringing in some extra oarsmen.

This fleet is designed to be fast enough to win on the second turn. I wanted to pair up two ships with +1 gold and +2 gold abilities. This allows me to send two gold home per turn, upping the value by +3 on each coin. Don Pedro allows me to trade away any rotten UTs or make sure I get enough gold coins to send home. I can win with only 3 coins, at +3 each then a 3, 2, 2 = 16 points. Or even 1, 1, 1, 1 = 16 points.

First turn:
1) Play Hidden Cove to move Banshee's Cry to an uncontested Wild Island.
2) Move away, redock and explore. Use Don Pedro to get rid of any bad UTs, or make sure there's enough gold to send home to win.
3) Use Jack Sparrow to trade one gold coin for the Explorer on the Bonnie Liz.
4) Use a move action to move the Bonnie Liz away and redock, unloading the gold coin for +3 value.
5) SAC the Explorer on the Banshee's Cry for another turn.
6) Move away and redock.
7) Transfer Genny Gallows to the Sea Crane as a free action.
8 ) Use Jack Sparrow to trade on gold coin for the Oarsman on the Sea Crane.
9) Use a move action to move the Sea Crane away and redock, unloading the gold coin for +3 value.

Second Turn:
1) Transfer Genny Gallows back to the Bonnie Liz as a free action.
2) Trade another gold coin for the Oarsman on the Bonnie Liz.
3) Move and redock the Bonnie Liz, unloading the gold coin for +3 value.
4) Move Genny Gallows and Powder Pete to the Sea Crane as a free action.
5) Trade the last gold coin for Powder Pete on the Sea Crane.
6) Move and redock the Sea Crane, unloading the gold coin for +3 value.

Problems:
No big gunships, all my ships are pretty fragile, particularly the Banshee's Cry. While Soul Mark will protect me from shooting, if any ship gets close enough to ram, I could run into some trouble there. My best counter here is just win as fast as possible. Hopefully most fleets won't be able to interfere with me in two turns.

Home island raiders. With such high-value coins on my HI, losing one or more could be problematic, particularly if I run out of crew to quickly transfer gold home. Again, my best counter here is just to win before anybody can get to my HI. If not, then hopefully I can catch the HI raider before she gets home, and if they have Parley on board as well, shoot and get the treasure back. I also included the Periscope UT to hopefully get around any pesky crew abilities, such as cancelers.

Great Fleet! Just not legal by the challenge rules. If you shifted the Soul Mark to one of the other ship's and maybe used Ahura Mazda, or a similar ship, this might have been fast enough to win.

What is Soul Mark for? I know this fleet is old, but the Cry doesn't have space for gold with the equipment.

Since Captain Jack links, the Cry has 5 total spaces. 4 are taken up by crew per Jonah's ability text. This would leave one space available before adding Soul Mark. Is this correct?

Ugh. Been awhile... yes, Jack Sparrow is linked to Banshee's Cry, so that adds another cargo space for him. I don't recall exactly why I added Soul Mark, but I think I was one point short of the total...? I had room for it, and my thinking was if I get shot at even once, the whole fleet stops working, and I'm pretty much sunk. So... parley means I lose a coin, but it might also give me a chance to survive another turn. I think this was for a specific Fleet Challenge, so there may have been some rules requiring equipment? Or maybe I was just trying out equipment to see how it worked.

If your opponent does not have any Cursed ships, then you can use the Hag of Tortuga to bring in an appropriate Letter of Marque and swap it for Soul Mark.

The basic idea was keep moving away and redocking with Banshee's Cry, and use Jack Sparrow to transfer the gold from the island directly to the Bonnie Liz. I don't think any gold ever gets loaded onto the Banshee's Cry, unless you lose some crew to a bad UT or a crew-killer, and then I guess you could try dumping everybody off, load up on treasure, and race for home... which Banshee's Cry was already pretty good at to begin with. However, there was a change in the rules on how treasure is unloaded on your home island, so I'm not sure this fleet works the same way. I never got a chance to playtest it, so I'm not sure if this works the way I think it does.

OK, that makes sense now, thanks. I've been thinking about Captain Jack's ability all wrong this whole time - I didn't even realize that the gold was never even loaded. So you can teleport gold home with a ship that has a full cargo hold without having to sail it back? Captain Jack is even better than I thought.

I was just searching through the old forum posts for past fleet challenges. I was amazed by the old Ocean Building contests! I just wish I had joined this forum earlier. (started playing in 2005 but joined MT in 2011)

This fleet was involved in a game!

This is some fleet! There are definitely a few things in this fleet that could be changed, such as Sunken Treasure and Pedro (see the report for details). However, this fleet is very complicated and interesting to play!

This fleet has gone 4-1 in VASSAL Tournament #2 to advance to the semifinals! (The fleet is now 5-1 overall)

It will be very interesting to see how it matches up against UPS 2, since by coincidence this fleet hasn't faced a normal fleet yet (3-0 against two different HMS GT deathmatch-oriented fleets, and 2-1 against a relatively similar USS Kettering fleet).

The T2 semifinals have begun with record scoring! This fleet tied its own record with a whopping 37 gold collected in a single standard game!

After losing in VASSAL Tournament #2, this fleet's record is now 7-5. Still an absolutely incredible fleet and gave eventual champion UPS 2 a serious run for its money. (literally)
