General description:

For those of you who may not be aware, Titania (“Mary ‘Skeeter’ MacPherran”) got her start (or rebirth, if you will) during the 1st Marvel Superheros Secret Wars. She was one of 2 females that suddenly appeared on the Beyonder’s created ‘Battleworld’, and there were imbued with superpowers by Doctor Doom.

[Mind you, their appearance was extremely convenient, ‘blatantly fortuitousness’ in fact. For those of you who are also sticklers for detail, the other woman was the girl ‘Marsha Rosenberg’ who was turned into the villainess Volcana - Molecule Man’s main squeeze, at the time. Another point to keep in mind is that Titania is actually the 2nd character to be so named in the Marvel Universe. The first Titania was a female wrestler, a member of ‘The Grapplers’, who was assassinated by the Scourge of the Underworld.]

Titania had been a scrawny little girl with a severe lack of nerve. She was transformed into the exact opposite of that persona, becoming a super-strong, near impervious ‘titan’, who took on such foes as Thor, the X-Men, and She-Hulk (who later became her arch foe) and held her own to a degree - though Spider-man gave her a shellacking that left her traumatized to face him for some time afterwards. It has even been suggested by various sources that Titania is actually just about the strongest female in the Marvel Universe, other than perhaps She-Hulk.

Titania the clix is, for the time period that it was released, not a bad representation of her. In fact, except for the usual drawbacks of most figures of the time frame, she is really about spot-on for her character. Like most clix’s of the day, though, she has been given what we refer to as the ‘weenie clixs’ on her dial. All the clix sets before Fantastic Forces had a deplorable lack of adequate Defense given to the clix’s, and they had a tendency to give the figures longer dials with ‘Pog’ level attack ratings. (No ‘Super’ figure should ever have less than an ‘8’ attack in my opinion.) In Titania’s case, her last 2 clix’s fall into the ‘weenie’ category. With all the previous being said, other than these items that have been mentioned, I still feel that her “Clobberin Time” Clix figure is still almost perfect for her, even in today’s game - though some have argued that a click or 2 of Charge is absent - however, I do not ascribe to this belief.

Were they to reissue her, I do not think that much would have to be changed. The sculpt could definitely use some updating, though I have no qualms with the original pose or attempt made at her previously, it was good for the time period and could just use some freshening up I think. I would never give her better than a ‘16’ Defense regardless, and maybe lower her point cost to around ‘75’ or so. That would about do it for an update. (In the day of the Special power, the only thing along these lines I might add would be a situational type thing, if she is near Absorbing Man or such. Since their relationship is currently on rocky standing though, I do not feel it mandatory to worry about adding this.)

Since the day of “Clobberin Time”, the only real use for Titania has been thematic, paring her with Absorbing Man or Volcana, or even as a minor addition to a Master of Evil team. As a no-range brick, without the means to get her to the fight, she has little other uses.

Strategies and game play:

If I were to classify Titania, she would be lumped into the secondary attacker spot. She is not really a brick, definitely not in today’s games, and only barely made the grade in those lines back in the day. With Super Strength and Invulnerability she cannot just be totally ignored, even in modern age play, but she is not really a major threat either. If you have TK or a Taxi to get her to the fight, she can seriously hold up a foes strategy, maybe even mop up a higher-level brick that has been wounded prior to that moment. Not much else to do with her though.

Combos with other miniatures:

I’m a sucker for thematic teams or pair ups; real comic teams or groupings, based on actual comic events, are my bread and butter. I would rather make a thematic team that actually exited or exists in the comics, than make what most would call a ‘killer team’. That said, and drawing upon what I stated above, the new Absorbing Man and Titania make for a decent pairing, if you give them some mobility and assistance from their Master of Evil buddies. As Titania was part of Zemo’s giant Master of Evil assault on Avengers HQ, it would be a simple thing to match her with any of those villains who were part of that squad, to flesh out a tournament worthy team. My suggestion is Baron Zemo and Moonstone, along with some Feats to add to the fun.

Ways to counteract it:

Lets face it, with no range, and limited options for paring, all you need is an Outwitter and Titania is done - as long as the dice are kind.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Etc: All covered above.

Artwork and aesthetics:

I did mention this above, but I feel the figure as it stands is kind of bland. For the time period it was done, it was only adequate. I think that even then they could have done a lot better. Still, it is almost a page off of the comics in its representation. As I said before, all that it needs is a bit of tidying up to make it worth having as is. (Someone I know once said the sculpt looks like her head was cast right after Spider-man threw her through the wall, lol.)

Overall rating:

My rating for this figure, overall, is a ‘4’. One might wonder, why the heck would you rate a figure you have so little ‘love’ for. The answer is as simple as the figure itself is; I think that, like all the other lost souls of Marvel & DC that have yet to get their due, Titania had to be made. More to the point, I am quite happy with the fact she made it into clix. That, more than anything is the reason for this review.

Personally, I feel that we need more of the ‘meat’ of the comics made into clix, rather than continually getting repeat after repeat of the same ole figures like Thor, Batman, etc. I would, in fact, be ecstatic to not see another mainline character released as a clix for the next several sets, and get more characters like Titania here, for at least a year. I really think that it is long since time that NECA/WK got the message and did what the fans want, rather than just throwing whatever they feel like at us. Heck, even reissues of characters like Titania would be a refreshing change.

Oh well, I guess we will see…

Ask and you shall receive - We have a new Titania coming out!

Nice to see reviews on pieces all but forgotten. A remake by WK on this one would be good.
