miniature review Le Colibri: Worst ship EVER!

Miniature Review
Le Colibri: click to enlarge
Le Colibri

Miniature text:

L-range cannons cannot hit this ship.

Le Colibri flits about the sea just like her hummingbird namesake. Capitaine Arnaud, the Hag of Tortuga's godson, knows the currents and winds better than any other French-born captain in the fleet.

Le Colibri
Worst ship EVER!

General description:
I can't find a nice way to say it... I think this ship stinks.

The back of deck-plate makes a fine measuring tool.

Strategies and game play:
The best strategy is to convince your opponent to use Le Colibri.

Combos with other miniatures:
Anything in your opponent's fleet (see above).

Ways to counteract it:
This ship is so slow it's easily rammed and made derelict.

It can't be shot at long range.

SLOW!!!! Why anyone would use a one-masted ship with a base move of S is beyond me. You'd have to add a Helmsman and a crew that gives extra actions to make it remotely useful.

Artwork and aesthetics:
Aesthetically this ship is fine but you can polish dog turds all you like and they still STINK!

Overall rating:
I give this ship a rating of 2. It is much too slow to be of any use to people that actually want to win this game.

I don't think the Colibri is that bad. True, it's slow. Horrendously slow. But say you come up against the Constitution. The Colibri's "L-range cannons cannot hit this ship" can come in handy then. I use it primarily as an anti-fort ship. Most forts that i see have L-range guns, so they can't touch the Colibri, and when you're attacking a stationary object, speed doesn't really matter. That's about the only thing it's good for though.

Point distribution is a factor to take into account and at 7 points it's a way better deal than the self important La Repulsa from Spanish Main. It might have S+L movement but it's twice what Le Colibri costs and at the time Crimson Coast was released, she was in exclusive company as being one of the few ships that had protection from L-range cannons. La Repulsa also has one less cargo space and requires friendly ships for its laughable ability... but at 14 points, it's quite obvious that you'd be better off buying a ship that has more masts to begin with rather than bestowing a bonus upon a single cannon rank. Had the Spanish not commissioned the construction of La Repulsa, they might have remained a world power.

So, in closing, one could certainly do much better than Le Colibri but one could also do worse. Much, much worse.

"Last one home has to build a fleet with La Repulsa!"

Obviously this person had a bad experience with Le Colibri, perhaps they opened their closet and it fell and hit them in the eye or something?

Of course, being a five-year old review, unlike a good rye whiskey, this one has only aged for the worse. Navigators, Deleflote and a helmsman can all help out Le Colibri today. True, she's still not the greatest ship, but she can be played effectively with very specific roles in mind - as was mentioned previously, taking on a fort having only L-range cannons being only one of them. Take her out of her comfort zone, though, and she bcomes no more than cannon fodder.

Maybe a more recent review could do her justice?

Just as an aside, this got edited AFTER I posted my vote of 5. With the current review I would have only voted a 1 or 2.
