Miniature Review
Franklin: click to enlarge

Miniature text:

If this ship has a Captain crew, she gets +1 to her cannon rolls. Link: Commodore Edward Preble.

The newest American ship has a very young crew. Only an experienced captain can whip these neophytes into a trained fighting machine.

General description:
The Franklin is quite possibly the best "bang for the buck" ship in the game. Even though 5-masted ships usually make the best gun-ships, Franklin can stand toe-to-toe with any of them with the right crew.

I would use this ship as my main gunship. With it's super-accurate cannons and low 13-point cost you don't need to spend the "big bucks" on larger, more expensive gunships.

Strategies and game play:
Franklin has a decent cargo hold and base move so it could be a viable gold-runner but its ability and cannons make it hard to pass up as a gunship.

Combos with other miniatures:
While a lot of the named Captains would go great on this ship it's ability only works with a "Garden Variety" Captain. All you need on this ship is a Captain and a Helmsman. Now you have a 4-masted ship that moves S+S+S with cannons that hit on anything greater than a 1 (and you get that for 18 points).

Ways to counteract it:
If you keep the crew at 2 this ship isn't even a big target for Mermaids. Sinking it is the only other option.

- Cheap cost
- Fast moving
- Good cargo
- Great cannons made even better by a complimentary ability

None whatsoever.

Artwork and aesthetics:
I haven't seen one yet.

Overall rating:
This one gets a 10 from me.

I personally think the Franklin needs some L-range guns, although with the Captain on it you could use Broadsides Attack to land five hits on a 1 or higher. A multiple action crew and/or someone who lets you move and shoot would also be a very good idea.

The +1 with Captain isn't valid with broadsides. No modifiers can be used with broadsides.

The only thing this ship lacks is an American 3pt same action twice crew member. Maybe with DJC.

This is quite an excellent ship - I would have thought any ship called the Franklin would be a 5 mast ship but this is a must have in an American fleet.

I give this review a 3. It is accurate and well written, but it lacks in content. In particular, I would like more ideas in the "strategies," "combos," and "how to counteract" sections. I'll place my vote later, as we are currently tied on the "Miniature of the Week" list, and it seems unfair for me to be the one to break the tie.

good review, I realy like that some people think that a review does not have to be long to be good. I like short reviews better mine is short.

It was a bit of a "vanilla" review for such an awesome ship - Commander Albert Crenshaw springs to mind immediately whenever I look at this ship(imagine a surpise attack with 4 L-range rank 1 cannons!! ). Still, it was very solid and compact, not a 5, by any means, though.

Maybe it's time for The Franklin to be re-reviewed, considering the crew and support ships the Americans have at their disposal now; and in view of this ruling: "If an ability refers to a “captain crew” it may be triggered by any crew with the Captain keyword, the text form of the captain ability, or the word “Captain” in its name or title."(Glad I checked before voting - feel free to fire away now, phymatine )

Commodore David Porter, Commander Albert Crenshaw, Pierce Hollow, and a helmsman.
