Subject: Favorite artwork for ships and crew   PostPosted: Sat Oct 03, 2015 5:36 pm Reply with quote

I've always loved that most of the artwork for this game is unique to that particular ship or crew. Hopefully this thread will do better than flavor text. I'll post some of my favorite crew later.

Being a fan of naval history, I love the Nelson chequer present in the first few sets, especially on the Lord Algernon and Titan.

We're all pirates here, so it should come as no surprise when we like shiny things, even if it's not gold!

The Maui's Fishhook glinting in the sun:

The Skin Flayer is shiny but deadly:

The Delusion:

Any and all things cursed, but in particular, the Abomination, with all of the wacky stuff on the sails and deck. For instance on the main deck there is a giant open 'mouth' that looks decidedly creepy. Also on one of the sails is Mr. Oogie boogie from Nightmare before Christmas.

I also like pretty much every Spanish ship before Oceans Edge, with all of the white sails and red crosses which catch the sunlight brilliantly. The ones from DJC with red sails and white is crosses are nice too, more foreboding and ominous.

Feel free to post pictures of the pieces using the insert a miniature function - this is a thread to show off artwork after all!

I forgot to mention in my original post that any custom designs are welcome as always.

I'm on the other side of the Abomination argument. It's just too over-the-top and unrealistic for me.

However, I do like the look of a lot of cursed ships, like the Loki's Revenge:

It's that very over-the-topness that makes it nifty in my opinion, the sails or masts look like parts to some now dead sea monster! Very Happy

I like ships with colorful sails, and when they have big designs on the sails like the Inferno:

I've always liked the American look of the Congress, and the 6 masted junks are classics. (Not to mention the Wiglaf if you can see her!)

This picture shows the various artwork for some famous Cursed ships; you can even make out the Loki's Revenge behind the Delusion!

A better shot of some of the Jade 6 masters, this picture also shows some of the hull of the USS Thomas Jefferson, which I've always admired. At the bottom, the unique-looking Tepant repairs.

One of my favorite pictures from Economy Edition, this one shows numerous ships, most notably the striped sails of the aforementioned Congress and the Muninn.

This picture shows all sorts of cool artwork! From left to right: the striped sails of the USS Kettering, the colorful USS Sea Tiger, the nice green trim on the hull of the Chesapeake, the fantastic Paul Revere, and the ominous Cursed at the bottom.

My favorite custom design is the RHS Hylia!

As for regular ships, I like the clean look of the USS Concordia.

Windcatchers also have an appealing look.

It's harder to think of ships when my collection is not handy, but I also like the designs of the submarines and turbines.

I think that George the Third, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith takes the cake.

...

(Just kidding! Razz)

I think that David "Bones" Wiley is the weirdest non cursed crew, he looks spooky and strange. I mean his flavor says he carved a pair of dice from a skull!! Shocked

Dragon eyes looks cool and mysterious, I also like both versions of Sammy the Skull. Most of the cursed look weird and dead-ish, which I think fits them, but when crew that look cursed, but aren't, such as Jean Desailly , it adds some diversity to the other nations, which is good in my opinion

This is one of my favorites.

Also this one.

The Constitution and the Revenant. Two of my all time favorites. Look good on the table and great to use.

I have to admit I like the look of USS Paladin. Not a bad ship either!

I always think of chess knights when I see her sails, I agree she's not a bad ship, likely to see action in Economy.
