Did anyone else hear about this story? It happened a little over a week ago (July 21st).

Off the coast of South Africa, a breaching Right whale launched out of the water, landed on top of a boat, thrashed around a bit, and smashed its main mast. That sounds an awful lot like a ramming and boarding attack! Shocked

Someone even managed to get a picture of happening:

Did that boat belong to Val Kilmer? The design on the sail screams the Saint http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120053/ at me.

Reference pic for the pin used by the Saint in both the original and the Kilmer remake http://www.allcollection.net/early-premium-pipes-or-gum-pin-plastic-simon-templar-the-saint-1960s-dunkin-no~x18246682

I saw this story also but the picture really looks like it must have been photoshoped together.

Whales destroying ships isn't new to me. There was once a case (read about it) in which an Orca smashed apart a yacht and the crew were forced to survive like true ship wrecked sailors for several weeks. It's a good thing that the boat wasn't further damaged.

Intrepid (12 Points):
Cargo Space: 2
Masts/Cannons: 3S
Ability: This ship cannot be sunk by a sea monster (masts may still be eliminated).
Flavor Text: The Intrepid's crew were on a peaceful cruise when an unfortunate whale ripped off the main mast. While the whale did not intend to do damage the crew has already prepared for further incidents with creatures of the deep.

The photo does have a sort of photoshop look to it (probably because it just seems so improbable for someone to take a photo like that). That said, there was also a video taken of the incident, and it looked a lot like the photo. I wouldn't be surprised if the photo is genuine.

Then there was the Essex, a whaling ship from Melville's time that got rammed and sunk by an 80-foot sperm whale (the incident inspired the story of "Moby D***" [grr...stingy word censors...]). The survivors had no food, and when they were on the verge of starvation they cast lots to determine who would be killed and eaten. Whales may be peaceful and gentle most of the time, but when provoked they can be very dangerous.
