45 Points

I wanted to find a way to make Specter work in a 40 point game, as I spent the money to win it off of eBay, and since most of the games I've played are casual 40 point games... yeah, pretty self-explanatory. As a whole, this fleet leans toward gold runners.

Specter's job is to act as both a gold runner and a "minesweeper" if you will. Given the number of negative UTs in play with this fleet, one would want to avoid them at all costs. She can ensure that L'Intrepide encounters few to no UTs that will negatively impact her ability to carry gold. Specter's Fear keyword and her sheer size ought to deter most assailants, especially if she's being escorted.

L'Intrepide isn't the most inspired choice for gold runners, but I wanted something good and cheap that wasn't Banshee's Cry. She's the faster of the two, so she can afford to run off to the first good island and grab some treasure, while Specter scouts out the next island to target.

USS Emerald plays the role of sole gunship, and though she's not the most powerful out there, her guns are good, she has a captain, and she's tough enough to take a few hits. With a little bit of luck, Preble may roll 6 when you're under attack, giving the potential firepower and durability of a ship twice her size. For the most part, though, those extra actions will be donated to Specter.

This fleet's strength is choosing only the best islands to target for exploration in a game teeming with hazardous UTs, and it banks upon your enemy's gold runners being hampered by said UTs, assuming you face a fleet that is also prioritizing gold.

The overall weakness is that the gold running ability isn't all that great, as Specter is really just disappointingly slow. USS Emerald, while not bad for the price, isn't going to last long against a ship of 4+ masts, and isn't particularly fast. This is really a fleet meant for a casual game, and as said above, is really more of an excuse to use the Specter more than anything. Because of the relative lack of defense, opposing fleets built more for war than gold will make quick work of this fleet. Even my recent Pesky Flappy Thing fleet is capable of wreaking havoc on this fleet by knocking out L'Intrepide, effectively halving the gold running capabilities.

I would take out Preble and give a captain and helmsman to the Specter, and an explorer to the Intrepide. The Specter is just too slow without a helmsman, you don't want all those guns to go to waste (not so much the quality but the sheer quantity - those 5 masts are 5/9 in this fleet). If the Specter is moving just L (really can't count on Preble at this build total with no reroll), the Intrepide is going to be really bored just sitting around and you may be forced to explore unknown islands just because you'd lose the game if you had to wait for the Specter.

You might know this already, but there are some considerably nastier UT's you could include, chief among them Natives, Missionary, and possibly Wolves. (assuming you don't want to deal with Plague)

Just a technicality, but if you play with standard treasure rules, there can't be more than 5 UT's if the gold values were 7,7,1.

I chose to keep 4 treasure spaces because of how my playgroup loads up islands. I know there's something to be said for just taking 3/4, and leaving the least valuable, but my preferences naturally dictate how I build a fleet.

I was really just rifling through my binder of UTs, Wolves/Missionary would almost certainly be good choices, though if my opponents go equally skint on crew for treasure runners, Missionary would be of little value. Pandora's Box I imagine is perfectly good for causing problems for my foes, though maybe some of these UTs should be substituted out for more damaging options and leave many of the second-rate treasures I listed out to be used when Pandora's Box is found.

Cool, I was mostly giving those crew choices due to the speed, not so much the extra cargo. It sounds like the people you play against are also less likely to use helmsmen on almost all their ships regardless of going from 4 to 3 cargo spaces as a result.
