Better late than never! This is a purely fun entry for the Sink the Battleship fleet challenge that completed last month.


I didn't enter this in the challenge because honestly, it's going to lose against that monster ship more often than it will win, but when it does win, look out!

Basically, the entire success or failure of this "fleet" hinges on three die rolls, each with 50/50 odds.

It works in theory because swoop attacks cut directly through to masts and will completely ignore the stack of armor protecting El Acorazado. Because they'll also be starting from somewhere outside of S-range, the ship's canceler won't protect it either.

It's safe to assume that each Sea Dragon will be killed quickly after making its swoop attack whether it does damage or not, but in the unlikely event that some of the ship's cannons miss, or it's already damaged enough, each of the dragons can take a few standard shots with whatever they have left in the hopes of getting an extra mast or two.

Once all of the masts are gone, one standard shot is all that is needed to finish it off (swoop attacks can't actually sink ships).


The extent of the strategy is to float outside the range of the battleship and make the swoop attacks as soon as possible. It will take a little bit of careful movement because the ship can technically reach more than L+L if Castro's extra action hits, so there is some danger there. Hiding directly on top of islands whenever possible will add a significant layer of protection, even when the battleship can get close enough to attack first.


This trio of dragons adds up to only 55 points, leaving 5 unused on the table. It would be nice to slip in a fleet action generator like Lord Mycron or Kheir-ed-din to give a few extra chances with the swoop attacks, but there's no way to make one of those fit within the limitations of the challenge, and anything else that would technically fit would be nothing more than a speed bump to the battleship and not worth including. Likewise, events are forbidden so you can't trap it with Becalmed or immobilize it with Mermaids.

Nice idea that I hadn't thought of. My only real critique is that it's a little "boring" IMO, similar to the Swallow BA combo... just rolling dice and trying to stay out of range haha. If you get the ranges right and the SAT fails, you can hope for 2/3 to be successful rolls, which would eliminate 4 masts and give the dragons a great shot at finishing the job. If 2 of the rolls don't work though, it would be an uphill battle.

The island thing makes me think of a question, but I'll post it in the Rules thread.

lol. I actually thought about doing a fleet with dragons for the challenge. My fleet consisted of 2 dragons and Mycron though, but I felt it wasn't going to work well enough because the dragons would be destroyed and if either missed it was all over, like you said heh.
