This is my version of the Norvegia build. Very fast and very effective.

(The REAL mean fleet mentioned by Aprilbooks! Used in only one tournament but won three games straight at 16-0 each. I probably will NOT use it again -- unless in a VERY serious competition -- because it is SO effective!)

Send the Neptune's Horde to the nearest wild island, eliminating a crew going and coming back to home island. Trade away low point coins along the way. Send the Star of Siam to the next closest wild island eliminating a crew along the way, trade away low cost coins, and build a fort. Send the Banshee's Cry to the 3d closest wild island (may not be necessary!) and build a fort.

Events are not normally played at our venue. If they were, I'd trade out Divers and a Hemsman from the Star of Siam, add an Oarsman to the Star and pick up the event "Favor of the Gods."

All the unique treasure should help increase the value of total gold (and doesn't take up hold space.)

A couple additional notes: The speed of this fleet is phenomenal. With the SAC, the Neptune’s Horde will get to an island 4 2/3 L away and the Star of Siam (with helmsman) 5 L away-- both on the first turn, and on the 2d turn (no SAC) the Banshee’s Cry 5 1/3 L. [You can’t count on your opponent giving you 3L placement on your islands!] Also Lucky the Parrot (besides being cheap SAC fodder) allows for you to check out your opponents crew.

I mentioned this fleet in my "intro" with my 40 pt English fleet with treasure. "REAL mean" is the most polite adjective I could come up with. I was second player and never even got to have a second turn. It took longer to set up the game than it did to play it! Not a fleet to be used often or with newbies or the unsuspecting.

I'm not sure how to rate it -- 5+ for effectiveness. A minus 10 zillion if I have to play against it again.

This is a darn good fleet. I use a similar strategy in the first two turns. Now my question is how do you defend your forts for the rest of the game. The hoard and the star ain't exactly forces to be reckoned with. And people tend to team up on you after you take most of the gold in the second turn ;)

Response to shawnallers: This is partially hypothetical and partially from experience. I only played this fleet in one tourney, but I have played other fast, treasure fleets. I've never really had a problem with that. The forts are usually placed at the time when it wins the game for me. It's rare that I have to place a second fort due to high gold values. When I get 16 gold, including that in the fort, the game is done. The fort so far has been able to hold out the extra turn it may take the Banshee's Cry to get to another island and buld the 3d fort. The only problem is making sure you have enough gold at home to build it. I haven't needed to, but you can move gold from the 1st fort to build the second -- just leave enough in the fort to pay for it's initial build.

Its surely true, this is one of the fleets to beat if gaming gets "serious".
But even playing this fleet is no guaranteed win-it will help to be the starting player....then playing fotg should be the first action.
Placement of islands is the key to victory or loss.
The forts will almost never be threatened....game will end too fast unless "negativetrasures" spice up the game.
;-)

THIS FLEET IS ONE OF THE BEST FLEETS I HAVE PLAYED AGINST IT HAS ALL THE NEEDS OF SKILL AND SPEED TO TAKE OUT YOUR OPPONENT AND GET THE GOLD HOME TO BUILD FORTS! THE CREW USED IN THIS IS MAKES FOR GREAT BONUS AND ALL I CAN SAY IS GAME OVER (LETS PLAY ANOTHER)

How can you call this fleet a treasure fleet when each of your ships only has one open cargo space? It is going to be a long game picking up one treasure at a time. You need to change that.

if you look again you will see that your coment is wrong plus once you hit an island dump the explorer if it is still alive via blackheart

This is actually a rather old fleet. The most recent set used is from Pirates of the Revolution and there are a number of rule changes that affect it now as well. There are some modifications that could be made now to improve upon it, but I assure you it is still a very effective fleet.

That being said, you do need to look at it in its entirety. I try to look at the overall odds and the odds are very favorable with this fleet.

First - the treasure. With 4 unique treasures, I have three each 4 gold pieces and one 3 gold piece. The unique are also high value treasures that are loaded face up – not take cargo space (I’d probably trade out Buried Treasure now with something like Dead man’s Chest – the large number of crew in this fleet would almost win the game alone) and you should average 1 UT per island as well as one of your own high value coins. This should average you about 6 to 9 gold with 1 cargo space. And remember a single oarsman doesn’t use a cargo space. If you have been unfortunate enough to hit an island with all low value coins, two of your ships can swap 1 and the odds are very high then that you will get a high value one and the other islands that your other ships are heading to will be very rich. Or if you get a bad unique, you can trade that away. And of course, when you get enough gold home, you can build a fort for the entire island’s gold. (This fleet was also created when you won the game immediately when you had 16 gold at your home island and/or fort.)

Second - The sacrifice ability can allow you to open up a cargo space as well as double the distance. Once you get there and explore the island the items mentioned above under treasure kick in. I’d probably now have Jimmy Legs, Jonah, an Explorer and an Oarsman on the Banshee’s Cry and move the Hag to another ship.

Third - The speed in all probability will allow you to arrive/look/select or trade before your opponent can get to the islands. I’ve always felt speed is another key element to this game and this fleet definitely has it.

This fleet does NOT guarantee a win, but it has a high probability of one. Island placement has always been important to the game, but the speed of this fleet does negate the effect of a less than optimum home island location.

As far as defense – mentioned in another critique – the Neptune’s Horde can be a decent combat vessel if need be with odds of taking out four of your opponents masts using the Sac Captain (8 shots at 50% chance of hit). That doesn’t leave much, if anything, left for your opponent to shoot back with.

Again, I look to the overall odds and with favorable odds in several elements of this fleet; chances are more than just good of a win.

I agree the chances of winning with this fleet are reasonably good, a couple things that will trip it up are Mysterious Islands effects, which neither Neptune's Hoard nor Don Pedro have any control over - if I was playing it, when they docked all the treasures would likely get switched of to another island or something, or I'd lose all my masts, and so on. A well-timed Hidden Cove and a scorpion ship will also greatly reduce the odds of a win - both the Star of Siam and the Banshee's Cry are too loaded with crew to be truly effective once the Hoard goes down, especially if it's the Cry that finds the Rum. Depending on gold-producing UT's that don't take up cargo space is risky business, as an opponent has just as much chance of finding them, and nowadays, Native Canoes and such make that all the more likely, not to mention the fact forts can't be built with the gold they yield.

(Another thing that could work against this fleet is something I will often do if I see a fleet with a treasure-trading ability, put in as many low-value coins as possible without any UT's - that usually slows the game right down, giving my gunships plenty of time to deal with the treasure-hunters.)

Not that anybody would really want to face this fleet, but if an opponent has relied one or two of the basic fleet elements and puts out some choice MI's during setup, it's not as big of a threat as it once would have been.

Good points lordstu... this fleet isn't nearly unbeatable anymore.

This fleet just beat a fleet using the Shui Xian in a series of 40 point games, two games to one.

Edit (2/19/13): This fleet has just beaten a French fleet consisting of the Bonaparte + the French trio of super-runners: L'Artesien, Le Bon Marin, and Le Pique.
