This fleet is designed to follow the Gunboat-Goldboat strategy to satisfy the two key aspects of the game: Getting the most gold, and blowing up your opponent's ships. |

I would put a helmsman on the Morocco instead of the shipwright. Also, keep in mind that the Leicester would be vulnerable to a canceller, a faster gunship, or a gunship that will be getting an extra action.

Thanks for the pointers on the Leicester, I am curious though what ships with 4+ masts would have movement greater than L+S given that she has a helmsman. Would an example of a canceller be a ship like the USS Constitution, 2 hits to eliminate one mast? Also most double action crew require a roll of 5 or 6 or sacrificing a crew member. A small correction is that the shipwright is not on the Morocco, she is only outfitted with an explorer.

A player could put a helmsman on a ship like the Executioner, but that is not a big deal. I should have been more clear-I meant the shipwright on the Leicester, not on the Morocco. I would opt for more speed on the main treasure runner rather than a (probably) useless repair action in the middle of a battle. In addition to actually getting to the island(s) faster, the Morocco would also then be able to outrun an enemy gunship (hopefully). By a canceller I mean a crew like Nemesio Diaz. When the Leicester comes into S range of the ship he's on, he can cancel your captain ability, leaving you a sitting duck for a return broadside. This is a potential problem with a lot of gunships that aren't equipped with their own cancellers. The Leicester has some L-range guns, however, so you can try to shoot any opposing canceller ships from out of S range (sometimes the maneuvering gets a bit tricky). Recently I have been using Stinkpot Shot with accurate L-range guns to great effect. The Leicester's guns only hit (theoretically) 50% of the time, however, so that wouldn't be reliable. It's not a bad fleet, by any means-I would give it at least a 3 as it is now. |

There are too many to list here, but there are quite a few 4+ masted ships that have a base move of S+S or S+L, both faster than the Leicester's L. Remember that your opponent(s) may put a helmsman on their gunships as well to gain the speed advantage. Correct, most double action crew require a roll of 5 or 6, but you'll find that many fleets include a reroller to increase their odds. In fact, some faster 4+ masters have the reroll ability baked in i.e. President, Lady's Scorn, and the LE HMS Apollo come to mind as suitable gunships. A good fleet, you really can't go wrong with the Morocco she's a great ship. However, she's a bit on the slow side for a gold runner at S+S. I like derelict transporters like Temple and others, but that's a lot of points to spend. It just feels to me as if this fleet will suffer due to its lack of speed, modified or otherwise. |

Something to keep in mind is that this is a 40pt fleet. For the points you spend you get a pretty good investment. The ships and crew with cancellers or double action will cost a good number of points out of your build total and can leave you with little to spend elsewhere.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the old HMS Leicester, even though it's really not a very efficient way to spend 18 points. Temple is an interesting idea, but the big downside to using him is that it takes both ships out of the action for several turns. Choosing the right time to use him will be critical so you don't leave Morocco unprotected or let a wounded enemy ship slip away.
You should consider adding a crew that will increase the accuracy of those big guns. Hermione Gold or Norrington would work well, although you'd probably have to leave Temple behind to make them fit. Griffin would be a cool option, but good luck finding a copy if you don't already have him. Morocco is a great ship, even though the Corsairs have several that are slightly better for a lower cost. Getting a sneak peek at treasure can come in handy, especially if you suspect your opponent stuck some bad things in the treasure pool. I assume you're ignoring nationality requirements for generic crew since that explorer is listed as Pirate instead of Corsair so he technically wouldn't work. |

The explorer on the Morocco is Barbary nationality however when adding crew that option did not show up in the list.
Hermione Gold would mean I could lose the Captain and possibly add a Firepot to replace him and Temple although I actually may have Griffin too. Also, would you mind listing some of the cheaper Barbary ships with more cargo. I am interested in using galley and turtle ships as gold runners. |

BC Explorer
None of them have more cargo space than Morocco, but they're all a bit cheaper and several of them are faster. You really can't go wrong with any of them, and a fleet with two or three running at once is more than a match for any other nation. |

While Temple's ability has the potential to leave the Morocco exposed, you do gain a ship in your fleet to either assist/take the Morocco's place as a goldboat or become her dedicated protector while the Leicester goes to finish off the rest of your opponent's fleet. Thanks for the tip for adding models. As for the ships it seems to come down to preference and a battle of cruise vs. cargo. Ships with less cargo can move faster but with a ship like the Morocco with 5 cargo, she can take an explorer and still have 4 slots left to hold treasure. |

The Hermione Gold or Norrington links referenced by Woelf maintain the captain ability, in this case it's the words "move and shoot" rather than the "Captain" keyword, with the added advantage on increasing the effectiveness of the HMS Leicester cannons by gaining a +1 on the rolls. Most likely you would have to sacrifice Temple to make it work, but it does gain you 2 extra points. Temple + Captain = 9, Hermione (or Norrington) = 7. |
