Here is another fleet designed with the storyline and links in mind. Mainly the Pride with the Laffite brothers, and the original Hawkins/Skyme link.
The Pride and the Royal James combined, make a rather nasty battle group. Phillipe helps peel off the more accurate cannons and of course the extra action for a ship in your fleet from his brother Jean is always nice. I find the broadsides on a smaller ship like the Pride is far more tempting to use then on most five mast ships. Jack and Skyme are a treasure ship’s nightmare, but are just as dangerous to a gunship while aboard the Royal James. The loss of two crew with a ram can really wreck your plans. With the Hag aboard the Venture, the chance of your opponent ever getting more than 1 point out of her is nearly zero.
The 5 bonus points of the Hag are not accounted for in this fleet, allowing for maximum flexibility in using it. I tend to chose events with these points, as that allows for the most trickery in your strategy. Try to arrange your first engagement with your opponent near terrain and use the Foul Winds to disrupt their positioning while crashing them on reefs or sticking them in sargasso. Becalm can help you set up for a devastating attack or a clean getaway as well, if you chose to spend your points that way.
I tend to send the Banshee’s Cry in one direction away from your opponent, and all four of the other boats towards a different island that may be closer to your opponent. After Longshank’s is headed home you can choose to escort her back with your two gunships, or go after one of your opponents boats. Don’t be afraid of gunships, even the HMS Titan can be eaten alive by these boats. (I have done it.)
