This is an update of my apparently ignorable Universal Pirate Shipping fleet. After checking with Woelf, some of the things I thought Captain Jack Sparrow could do are not legal. He can only trade UTs that are loaded face-down, so Barbary Banner, Jade, Rum, Smuggled Goods, Spices, and Sunken Treasure won't work. And he can't get rid of negative UTs such as Plague, Scurvy, Rats, or Rotting Hull.

This fleet is designed to have the game essentially locked up after two turns by using Captain Jack Sparrow's ability to build two forts, locking up half the gold in play and sending home at least two treasures per turn.

First Turn:
1. Hidden Cove the Hai Peng out to a wild island that is about 3L away from another wild island, neither of which have been previously explored by your opponent.
2. Use the Hai Peng's first move action to move away and redock, exploring the wild island and trading one coin to L'Intrepide.
3. Use an explore action to unload L'Intrepide's coin for +2 gold.
4. Sacrifice the oarsman on the Hai Peng to Jimmy Legs to move to the next unexplored wild island.
5. As a free action load the traded oarsman on the Hai Peng.
6. Move the Hai Peng to the nearest unexplored wild island. You should be able to get there in a single move action. Explore it and trade one gold coin for an oarsman on Le Coeur de Lion.
7. As a free action, swap Maurice Aristide with the remaining oarsman on Le Coeur de Lion.
8. Use an explore action to unload Le Coeur de Lion's coin for +2 gold.
9. Build a fort (preferably Paradis de la Mer or St. Pierre) on the wild island where the Hai Peng is currently docked.

Second Turn
1. Move the Hai Peng away and then re-dock at the same island with your first fort. Send another coin to L'Intrepide.
2. As a free action, swap Maurice Aristide back onto L'Intrepide and put another oarsman on Le Coeur de Lion.
3. Use an explore action to unload L'Intrepide's coin for +2 gold.
4. Sacrifice an oarsman to Jimmy Legs, load the traded oarsman as a free action, and move back to the first island you explored. Send another coin to Le Coeur de Lion.
5. As a free action, move Maurice Aristide to Le Coeur de Lion.
6. Use an explore action to unload Le Coeur de Lion's coin for +2 gold.
7. Build a second fort at the island where Hai Peng is docked.

Third Turn?
You should have won by now, if each coin you sent home was worth at least 2 gold ((2 + 2) x 4 = 16) . If not... keep moving back and forth between your forts until you've sent home enough gold to win, or fill up the Hai Peng with gold and win that way.

Another thought: If you find a gold coin worth at least 4 gold on the first island and load it onto the Hai Peng, you can unload it at the beginning of your second turn to St. Pierre for an extra action. Use your first action to move away and redock as your first action (sending a coin home), use your second action to move away and redock again, and then use your SAC action to move back to your first island. You'll only have Maurice Aristide back home to trade for, so you won't get the +2 gold on the last coin, but you will be able to send five gold coins home that way.

Problems:

No combat-worthy ships. If the Hai Peng gets caught by a fast ship or some kind of extra-action monster, she's dead meat. Vlad's San Cristobal could eat the Hai Peng alive on the second turn. Submarines might also be a worry, since I have no way to deal with them, but I'm not sure they could get within range of the Hai Peng by turn 2 to cause much trouble.

Another problem... < sheepish look > I don't actually own Jimmy Legs or Princess Arii Auraa. And I've looked at most of the other challenge fleets already.

Not everyone who wears a fancy uniform deserves it - especially not Vicomte Jules de Cissey. Every inch the powdered puppy, his shrill demands and pretentious behavior make him generally disliked by all who meet him. He is, however, a vicomte with means, so he continues to receive his social due, though this presence adds no luster to events.

  • Faction Affiliation: Pirate
  • Rarity: C
  • Type: Fort
  • Cannons: 3L-3L-3L-3L
Miniature text:

Gold Cost: 3

When this fort hits an enemy ship, you may also eliminate one cargo from that ship.

The fort at Dead Man's Point on the pirate island of Tortuga is a deadly surprise to ships moving slowly to avoid being grounded on the maze of reefs surrounding her harbor.

1 x Paradis de la Mer Paradis de la Mer (PofRU)
  • Collector's Number: UL065
  • Faction Affiliation: France
  • Rarity: C
  • Type: Fort
  • Cannons: 2L-2L-3L-3L-4L
Miniature text:

Gold Cost: 4

The first time this fort is shot at each turn, roll a d6. The result is the number of times this fort must be hit that turn before any of its cannons can be eliminated.

The Paradise of the Sea is now home to second-generation French settlers, who will fight to the death to keep their island safe from outsiders.

1 x St. Pierre St. Pierre (PofCC)
  • Collector's Number: 091
  • Faction Affiliation: France
  • Rarity: C
  • Type: Fort
  • Cannons: 4L-4L-4L-4L-4L
Miniature text:

Gold Cost: 3

If a ship docks at this fort and unloads at least 4 gold, it may be given a second action that turn.

Informed captains know that when they dock at the port of St. Pierre, a little extra gold ensures that their cargo will be unloaded swiftly - and without a lot of questions.

1 x The Devil`s Maw The Devil's Maw (PofRU)
  • Collector's Number: UL022
  • Faction Affiliation: Pirate
  • Rarity: C
  • Type: Fort
  • Cannons: 2S-2S-3L-3L-3L
Miniature text:

Gold Cost: 5

Place your eliminated crew on this fort. They gain the Ghost Ship keyword.

Rumors say that The Devil's Maw holds a king's ransom in gold, but you must give up your soul to claim it - a price even pirates hesitate to pay.

This is a great fleet ... if your venue permits forts! I believe Woelf said that forts are no longer supported by WK, though privateers can choose to allow them if they choose to do so.

It's a very good idea, almost like a mutated version of Norvegia. Also, since you thought of it and posted it, you alone can play this fleet without it being called someone else's idea or cheesy. (Anyone else who plays it...cheesy...like loaded multi-action gunships.) I like the St. Pierre idea as well, very good use of a fort! Nice job in the contest overall as well, you've posted lots of high-quality stuff.

Actually, Woelf said that forts are still part of the game, they just don't appear in any of the new sets. In fact, he fixed the rules so that forts work fairly well, and are no longer the game-enders they were before.

Very good job, Darrin!
You spoke very highly of Jack Sparrow, it is nice to see him in a fleet that employs him!
And what's even better is the fact that it isn't a themed fleet.
Then again, most Disney stuff just ended up in non-theme builds anyway.
But still, you did a wonderful job.

I doubt I'm the first one to come up with a Captain Jack cheese fleet. Using him twice a turn by moving Maurice Aristide back and forth may be new.

I figured out a way around not having Princess Arii Auraa with pieces I actually do own. Replace L'Intrepide and Le Coeur de Lion with:

Venture 4
- Genny Gallows 3
- Oarsman 1

Banshee's Cry 3
- Hag of Tortuga 0
- Oarsman 1
- Oarsman 1
- Oarsman 1

Genny Gallows' ability can't be used with an explore action, I'd have to move away and redock, and some of the free actions/crew transfers would have to be tweaked a bit, but overall it should work just as well. I'd lose access to the French forts, however, and sacrificing crew becomes more problematic with the Devil's Maw in play.

The most ideal combo would probably be Le Coeur de Lion with La Fureur (another ship I don't have), that saves me 2 points which I could trade in with Raft for Mermaids or Banshee's Cry/El Algeciras as a treasure-runner (maybe setting up a third fort on at the end of turn 2).

So... anyone got a spare Jimmy Legs? =)

Hi darrin! I only didn't get one thing: how could you trade as a free action Aristide from one ship to another...are both Le coeur de lion and le intrepide docked at your home island? I think so, but please confirm.
Really, this fleet is kinda cool, especially considering the L+S+S+L+S+S+L+L move of your Hai Peng. I don't think there's actually much to do to counteract this fleet for sure...you should be lucky, when facing this fleet, and roll a lot of double actions, or either use a flotilla with a super-fast ship...hmmm...that's so difficult.
So, a very cool fleet! I'm not sure if i'll be ever playing her because i don't like easy winning ;-)
ciao! Fede

Yes, both French ships stay docked at the home island. Le Coeur de Lion would be vulnerable to ramming in such a case, but hopefully no one will be fast enough to get within ramming range by the 2nd turn.

Your challenge fleet with the HMS Titan would actually have a very good chance of sinking the Hai Peng on the first or second turn. Three L+S moves, which is pretty likely with a SAC/SAT/EAC Titan, should put you in firing range, and three hits will sink her.

Vlad's San Cristobal could also crush the Hai Peng. San Cristobal can certainly catch or keep up with the Hai Peng, and he could ram+shoot+board, any of which on their own might be enough to stop or neutralize the Hai Peng, much less all three.

i thought the challenge fleet i posted was pretty good, but after seeing yours i don't think i'd stand much of a chance were we to play a match...

This fleet is ignorable no more!

Check out the Battle Reports thread.

(I would post the battle report here but for some reason it's not allowing me to post very much text at all.)

12/23/14: The final two games have been played: Battle Report

This fleet is now 2-1.
