Fleet "Raninoidea Raiders 32 points" - 37 Points (extended format) show standard format
created by captain_arrr Premium Member

This is one several Sea Monster fleets I want to get people's input on. Everyone gets 32 points and they have to include a sea monster.

It has a pretty clear strategy. The Raven goes and gets treasure while avoiding other sea Monsters, while Raninoidea either protects her or goes on the offensive. Or even explores and holds other islands till the Raven arrives.

I am debating if the Raven is too much and I should just use the Bloody Jewel with a helmsman and oarsman. Any thoughts?

Raninoidea is one BAD MOTHER. . .

    *shut your mouth*

    I'm just talking about Ran.

Now that I understand how you choose your build numbers and requirements, I think I can give you a suggestion.

First, you can't work the Griffin in. Your trying to use Cannonball to add 5 extra points, but you don't get those 5 points until you set down your ships and put him on a ship. It doesn't mean that you get to build 37 points automatically. It means after you build and setup your 32 points, you can then add 5 points and only 5 points. THere's no carry over.

So, in actuality, you have 31 points to start the game without Griffin. Since Griffin is 6 points, you can't use Cannonball to buy Griffin. However, there's a cheaper way to get the reroll: Cannoneer. If you spend the 5 points to get a Captain and a Cannoneer, you've got it. Really, the only reroll you'd be doing on Ran is a missed cannon shot, right?

Raven is a good addition. Very very fast with Schooner.

In your 32 point games, does everyone usually have only 2 ships, or are there any fleets with 3 ships?

Hmmm, I guess I never thought of Cannonball's ability like that before. And we usually don't use it as such, but usually there is no need. I'll alter the list to accommodate though.

True, the only need will be for cannon rolls. I might also throw an explorer on the Raven with the extra points.

Its hard to say. I think with the parameters in place 2 ship fleets will be the norm. Some may have 3 ships, but I doubt they'll have anymore than 1 gunship of any type. It's hard to say, we've never done 32 point games that require a sea monster before.

I'd replace the Raven with Banshee's Cry and Longshanks. BC can do all the treasure running the Raven can do for only 3 points, and Longshanks can either be your back-up treasure runner, provide support for Raninoidea, or roll out the guns in a pinch. Just not quite sure you can get a captain on Longshanks... not without losing the cannoneer on Raninoidea.
