I take it Baal really likes Mermaids?
Countess Diana Doone reduces the points of crew placed on a ship, but since her ability doesn't work until she's placed on a ship during "Setup". She has no effect on your total points when "Creating a Fleet". You still have to count those points towards your total. And I'm not really sure you need her on board... or Rhys Griffyn Owen. Other than cannon rolls, there's no "5 or 6" ability you'd need to reroll, and you can't SAC him to Blackheart for an action. You could switch Countess Daina for an Explorer or another Oarsman and still come in under the 15-point ship limit. If you wanted to keep Diana, you could shave another point off by replacing your Helmsman with an Oarsman, and bringing in the Helmsman with Cameron. You could then SAC Cameron followed by Diana and still be under the 15-point ship limit. But I'd much rather take Diana out and replace her with Favor of the Gods, if you can get ahold of it. |

I’m a new player actually and I was trying to make a quite competitive fleet.
We are not playing events... so no fear of mermaids in my playgroup. Few questions 1) I added Rhys Griffyn Owen because he is linked to other crew an takes no room in the ship and has a 0 cost... Why can’t I sacrifice him? 2) The helmsman is bringed by Cameron in first turn. 3) Can’t understand the difference between setup and create a fleet... I assumed you put your ships together and start counting point on each. 4) Diana reduces cost of all other crew so it can fit in the 45 points allowed to be in play. So... Diana first 2 points 1 cargo slot Rhys Griffyn Owen 0 points 0 cargo slot Oarsman 0 points 0 cargo slot Blackheart 4 points 1 cargo slot Cameron 2 points 0 cargo slot Helmsman 0 points 1 cargo slot First mate 2 points 0 cargo slot (+1 Cargo) Oarsman 0 points 1 cargo slot (Second oarsman costs 1 cargo space I read) That’s 10 points for the crew plus 15 = 25 the grand temple (6 sacrifices) HMS Clear wind + capt= 13 7 points last ship That makes 45, what is wrong in all that? |

From the Pirates FAQ: Ransom (keyword) Q: Can a crew with the Ransom keyword be sacrificed to Captain Blackheart to gain an extra action? Can I transfer the crew to my home island so it can‘t be captured? A: Crew with this keyword can be eliminated only by an enemy, and cannot be unloaded to any island unless captured. Friendly abilities cannot be used to modify this ability.
Aha. No need to list it as part of your initial fleet, then. Besides, you may change your mind after seeing your opponent's fleet and decide you need a Specialist or some other crew.
"Creating a Fleet" and "Setup" are two different sections in the rulebook. The only important difference is when you initially build your fleet, none of your crew are assigned to any ships yet so they can't use their abilities. Crew that change your points can only use their abilities when they are placed on ships, which happens in the "Setup" phase. This means Commodore Rhys Gryffyn Owen (+5 points), Countess Diana Doone (reduce all crew by 1), Jonah (reduce cost of crew to zero), or someone using the Black Mark ability (increases their cost by 1) doesn't have any effect on your initial build total.
From the Pirates FAQ: Point Reducers and Modifiers “Reduce the cost of all other crew placed on this ship by 1.” Countess Diana Doone – Gaspar Zuan – Inquisitor Sebastian Blanco – Phillipe du Brissac – Pierce Hollow – Ruth Lee – The Stump “Crew placed on this ship cost no points, but they always take up one cargo space.” Jonah – Princess Arii Auraa – Robinson Q: When do these abilities apply? A: Abilities that reduce or modify the point values of other crew apply when placed on a ship. This first occurs during setup, after building your fleet, so they only apply toward the point limit of a ship. They do not allow you to exceed the build limit of the game. And yeah, this is never explained very well in the rulebook, so you have to be familiar with the FAQ. You can be playing this game for years and still run into veterans who aren't aware that this is how crew like Jonah and Countess Diana Doone work (which can be particularly traumatic when you try to explain to them that they can't load 80 points of crew on the Darkhawk II with Jonah on board). |

OK, got it...
Thank you very much for the answer. But now, any thoughts on how do I make this fleet work at peek performance? Grand temple is a must... how can I load him to work whith captain blackheart. Clear wind can be switched with HMS Titan on the other hand. Thanks in advance for the insight! |

HMS Grand Temple 15 - Captain Blackheart 5 - Cameron the Cabin Boy 3 - First Mate Ismail 3 - Oarsman 1 - Oarsman 1 - Oarsman 1 Total: 29 points This gives you 6 possible extra actions... and you may not need that many. For most games, you'll only need 3-4, at which point the game should be pretty much decided. If you need additional crew to sacrifice later in the game, you can probably capture a couple from your opponent. If you're playing a 40 point game... hmm. There aren't a lot of English treasure runners. If you move Ismail from the Grand Temple to the Clear Wind and take off an Oarsman, the Clear Wind+Helmsman can work as your treasure runner. For a 50 point game... assuming it's not a standard treasure-hauling game, take off an Oarsman and you can squeeze in the HMS Titan+Captain+Helmsman. Otherwise, Clear Wind+Captain and HMS Disraeli should be fine. Although be careful with the Disraeli... you don't want to eliminate crew that Blackheart could capture and sacrifice. |
