A sucky neccessity

General description:
Well its not often you have a ship that isnt very fast or very durable and loses her masts on bad die rolls considered a must for a fleet. The Nighmare is the one exception. She is the only ship in the cursed fleet that costs less than 5 points. She only moves L and she only has 3 cargo spaces so she is a mediocre ship for trasure hunting but at 4 points she is your only low cost option. Her cannons are 2s And 2L so in a pinch she has a shot of defending herself or helping a larger ship in a battle.

Uses:
Use this ship as a low point cost support ship for a gun battle or treasure hauling. She cannot survive alone but she makes a good low point support ship for a convoy.

Strategies and game play:
There are not any fancy strategies for this ship as she doesnt do anything well. But at her low cost for the cursed fleet she fills a hole.

Combos with other miniatures:
To really be effective this ship should not be left alone on the high seas. She is best used as a partner for another higher cost ship.

Ways to counteract it:
The nightmare is not a scary ship. Other players need not really be worried. Any gunship could easily end this ships day.

Strengths/Pros:
Only cursed ship inder 5 points. Cannons are rank 2

Weaknesses/Cons:
Mediocre speed, Medocre cargo space. Loses her masts on cannon shots of 1

Artwork and aesthetics:
The ship itself is basic looking. Much like her abilities her looks are middle of the road.

Overall rating:
I rate this ship 7/10. She gets a 5 for her abilities, but it gets bumped to a 7 because of her cost. I almost never create a fleet without her. Hopefully Wizkids will give the cursed fleet more low cost ships in the future so that this one can be put in dry dock. Untill then I expect her to be a common sight on tabletops everywhere.

I can't tell if you're either speaking about DJC and The Cursed nationality exclusively or if you haven't seen the cheaper ships in previous expansions.
If I had to guess, I'd say the latter from your comment about future Cursed ships. No shame in that; everybody's got to start at some time. Since Pirates of the Barbary Coast, no new nationality has been seen in consecutive expansions and I doubt that there will be a change in that format.

If you have 4 points, Revolution's Banshee's Cry (3 points) with an Explorer will be much higher on the list of possible choices than a Nightmare. Nightmare is a fraternal twin of Spanish Main's Carrion Crow. Same ability, mast count and cannon ranks but Carrion Crow has a 2 cargo, S+S speed and both cannons are S-range. Nightmare has a slight edge on Carrion Crow in that the L-range and S-range cannons can handle either the "L-range cannons cannot hit this ship" or the "this ship cannot be shot at by ships within S of her" abilities.

Nightmare is Cursed so the only named crew she can fit are Devereaux, Tabatha McWarren and Sargasso Nightmare. Tabatha would be pointless to use unless you wanted Lucky the Parrot aboard. Devereaux would need a captain on board to make the most of his abilities and Nightmare can't fit one. So Sargasso Nightmare fits the named crew bill best and can make for one heck of a long distance sea monster ram.

I was speaking about the Cursed faction exclusively. While like you said there are many other great low point ship options none of those options fly the cursed flag. So if you want a pure Cursed faction fleet, the only low cost ship option is the Nightmare. I hadnt thought about the Saragasso nightmare option for this ship, but if you are lucky enough to own a Mistwalker this combo could cover a lot of ground quickly.

Is the foremast suppposed to be backwards? is it part of the "look"?

If you wanted to get really crazy (and who doesn't now and again?), throw "Jerky" Johnson aboard the Rattlesnake (or the Salem if you wanted to play DJC expansion only) on one side of a sea monster and Sargasso Nightmare in the Nightmare on the other side during setup for a sea monster turbo boost. Mist Walker (Texas Ranger) already has a move ability so for my money I'd rather launch a sea monster that has a painful ability delivered upon impact of a ram, like one of the giant squids other than Slarg Gubbit. A Behemoth given the Captain ability would have a one-shot move of L+L+L and lay waste with five rank 2 S-range tentacles.

The Cursed nation works better at higher price ranges to accommodate their pricey crew which are designed to be more flavorful than practical. I feel that the Jade Rebellion faction soars above the Cursed nation in this respect and higher still over the Barbary Corsairs.

The foremast in the image is on backwards and whoever took the photo hadn't noticed.

I hate this ship. I use it frequently as a cheap gold-forager, and always end up having to shoot my cannons and taking my own masts in the process. ALWAYS happens to me.
