Pescados de Plata
The first Spanish hybrid ship?

My first review! For my first review I decided to write about a ship that has no review to date and is overlooked, the Pescados de Plata.

General description:
There are a plethora of small slightly overlooked two mast ships in the game, ranging from the El San Francisco to HMS Half Moon . I now present another: Pescados de Plata, sailing in at 8 points with S+S speed, and an ability very similar to La Monarca . She comes from the very first set, Spanish Main and is possibly the very first hybrid ship in the game.

Uses:
With rank 2 guns and three cargo the very first obvious choice is to use her as a minute gunship, and this is do-able, but then consider her ability: “This ship may move S after unloading cargo”. Note that it says CARGO, not just treasure, this means her ability will kick in anytime she unloads a crew, treasure or equipment. This makes me more inclined to use her as a hybrid, capable of grabbing one or two coins with enough of a bite to fend off other smaller treasure ships.

Strategies and game play:
Use her as a small hybrid. Her ability can be used to jump-start her back into action after her first trip out, unloading a coin and any unwanted crew. This allows her to immediately move S, which while not part of the base move can come in handy if you need to return to the field quickly.

Combos with other miniatures:
At the most basic you need a captain, helmsman or explorer. These give you the three essential functions of move and shoot, more speed, and explore in an action. The captain and helmsman are not necessary per se, as it will depend on how you want to field this wonderful little ship. If you are more inclined to shoot, add the captain, if you are more inclined to grab gold add the helmsman. The explorer is necessary only for the first explore action, and can be left either at the wild island to help get home, or at home to help get back to the island.
If you want to get creative there are a plethora of very good Spanish crew to put on her.

Joaquin Vega can be added for some extra durability against slightly larger gunships, coupled with a captain and 1 point equipment can make a very pesky little gunship to deal with.

Dominic Freda can be added to provide explorer, plus one to cargo and taking up no space. This coupled with a helmsman gives you a quick little ship with room for three coins.

Another combo is Bianco's Haulers with a helmsman. This allows you to unload your gold within S of your HI, and then use her ability to move S back into the fray.

The possible combos could go on and on. There are several great Spanish crew that can serve on this fine little vessel.

Competition:Keeping with ships that are the same size, El San Francisco with 5 cargo and a L range gun eclipses this ship in terms of hybrid potential. 5 cargo is much easier to work with, and her lone L range cannon will give her a slight edge. Her ability is situational at best and is the one aspect holding her back from completely overtaking the Pescados. For larger ships, the Darkhawk II , HMS Dover and La Santa Isabel , the penultimate hybrid ship, are all much better at running as hybrid ships.

Ways to counteract it:
Bring a bigger, faster ship. Pescados only has two masts and those masts will quickly fall if she is forced to engage anything larger than her. Any ship that cannot be shot at within S, with only S range cannons the Pescados is at the mercy of such ships. Another option is to grab the gold faster and force the game to an end. Standard anti-ship tactics are also viable.

Strengths/Pros:
Decent base speed
Good cannons
Spanish

Weaknesses/Cons:
Small cargo hold
Only S range cannons
Small size

Artwork and aesthetics:
: Coming from Spanish Main she resembles the general trend of Spanish ships of that era, red crosses on the sail, clean hull with some yellow trim at the water line. Interestingly enough her sails are not clean white, they are darker than other sails, indicating that they are worn, which is not an issue with me. Artwork: 10/10

Overall rating:
A nice little ship with a very unique ability that gives her some fantastic potential as a hybrid ship, the very first. Her only drawbacks are her small cargo hold and small size, bigger newer ships will eat her for lunch, also with S+S she can only go at max S+S+S, which is good, but just not always enough. Overall: 8/10

Great to see you get into the Review game! Unfortunately the MR section has been mostly dormant for a while now, but it's nice to finally see a new one.

The Pescados is definitely a decent ship. She would be much more popular if her base move was just a hair faster at S+L. However, she can serve a player well, and as woelf pointed out in that thread, putting a very old-school combo of Master Bianco and Bianco's Haulers onboard can result in some fun.

She can serve as a hybrid, but it's tough not to give the title of "first hybrid" to the Darkhawk II or HMS Dover. Both ships are better at being hybrids, and they come before the Pescados in the numbering system.

The combo with Dominic Freda actually leaves room for 3 coins, since he adds a space and doesn't take up space.

Good review.

I'll make an edit about Freda. Perhaps I should have worded it a little differently, unless I am mistaken, the Pescados is the first Spanish Hybrid, but you do make a good point about the Darkhawk and Dover, I'll make an edit to address them as well.

Ahh, but what about the Cazador del Pirata? One of my favorite ships!

Fair point, she is a very good ship, but her base speed of L is a little slow. Her max speed would be L+S which is just slower than S+S+S the max speed of the Pescados. In almost all other aspects she is better than the Pescados, larger cargo, decent guns, all L range, and a very handy combat bonus.
However in defense of the Pescados, I think she has a potentially better ability overall, the ability to move after unloading cargo will help her get back to wild islands quicker. Also even though her guns are all S range, they are rank 2 while the Pirata's are rank 3, rank 2 against pirates which is situational, you wont always play against pirates. This limits the usefulness of her ability while the Pescados can be used against whomever you are playing.
Speed and gold gathering will win most games, and the Pescados is slightly faster which means she gets gold faster, therefore the Pescados is only slightly better than the Pirata. in all fairness they are almost equal and playing them both together would be interesting to see.

A friendly argument, eh?

The Cazador is definitely a better ship. For just three more points you get an extra cannon, more durability, and twice as much cargo. The Cazador has so much cargo that you can add a captain, helmsman, and explorer and still have room for three coins! After adding a helmsman or explorer to the Pescados, you only have 2 cargo, and either way the slow S+S speed or the turn sitting waiting to explore an island will be a time for an enemy gunship to potentially hit the Pescados. The Cazador's point cost and cargo hold gives her access to considerably more Spanish crew combos, of which they have many.

I know you have the Cazador, so I would suggest using her more often!

I would recommend the combo of:

Dominic Freda + Luis Zuan + Helmsman

as this combo enables El Pescados to move at S+S+S, have a captain, and have two cargo spaces open.

This, however, is a very expensive (16) point combo, which would be better spent on La Joya del Sol with Luis Zuan and a Helmsman .

That's one of the issues I have with smaller ships: they rarely seem to be worth their point costs. I would have liked for larger ships to scale more in cost so that small ships were still worth using overall.

+1

Yes, most ships under 3 masts are only worth it in a small treasure ship role, and only then when they don't break the bank. There are exceptions like using them for Mycron or navigators, but then you're not really even using the ship in the first place.

Good review, although I completely disagree about trying to run this ship as a hybrid. To make this ship shine you need to pick one role or other the other and set it up for only that, otherwise it's going to be lacking in both categories. The cannons are nice for cost and it can certainly run around with a Captain and a Helmsman, but to still add an Explorer on top, even Freda, leaves you with a pitiful amount of cargo space to do anything but pick up the scraps left behind by more dedicated runners.

If you want to go the combat route there are better ships to use for just a few points more, like Cazador mentioned above, or even better yet the devastating Asesino de la Nave.

Even though the far superior La Monarca stole its job a few sets later, Pescados was always best as a pure runner, with little more than an explorer and maybe a helmsman if you needed the extra speed (back then it wasn't as critical). The classic (and still great all these years later) combination of Master Bianco + Bianco's Haulers was practically custom-made for this ship and made it a treasure-running powerhouse, long before Freda was even a twinkle in some designer's eye.

Did you mean Asesino? A captain has no business whatsoever being on La Joya, unless you're also carrying a +1 cannons crew and/or have Roberto Santana backing you up somewhere else in the fleet. Even Spain has numerous ships right around the same cost that are far more combat capable.

No, I meant the Sun's Jewel. It is not the strongest "hybrid," being more of a "semi-hybrid," but the captain ability is worth having on her thanks to the number of cannons--even dull fangs are better than none.
