General description:
Sensei Xu is the Jade Rebellion's version of "Cameron the Cabin Boy" but with the bonus of being linked to the ship Grand Temple.

Uses:
Sensei Xu's value is particularly good on Grand Temple (explained further below).

Strategies and game play:
See combos.

Combos with other miniatures:
As stated earlier, Sensei Xu is basically just the Jade Rebellion's version of "Cameron The Cabin Boy" allowing you to bring a crew worth 2-points or less from outside the game. The "South China Seas" version of Zheng Li Kwan has the "Blackheart" ability (sacrifice a crew for an extra action) so Sensei Xu can "summon" a cheap crew member to sacrifice Zheng Li Kwan.

Sensei Xu is also linked to Grand Temple which is a huge bonus. Since his ability is also that he takes up no cargo, when he's on the Grand Temple he basically becomes a Chinese "Master Bianco" for nothing since the rules for linked crew add one cargo space to the ship and Xu's ability is that he takes up no cargo space. A great bonus!

Ways to counteract it:
Normal anti-crew tactics.

Strengths/Pros:
When on Grand Temple he's grants the abilities of two crew totalling 6 points for only 3.

Weaknesses/Cons:
None.

Artwork and aesthetics:
It's great!

Overall rating:
I give Sensei Xu 8 out of 10 for his versatility.

Subject: Interesting combo....but....you do the math   Posted: March 25, 2006 08:40 pm Reply with quote  Report content icon

The review is thought provoking, but let's figure out how much all this Sensei, Zheng, GT stuff costs.

Grand Temple 20
Sensei 6
Zheng 5
2 oars 2

OK, so that puts us at 33 points with one crew slot left.

If you're gonna use Grand Temple as a treasure hauler (to take advantage of Zheng's other special ability), you put on an explorer for a 34 point hauler that can get 5 extra actions. That's a lotta points for one hauler.

If you want ot take advantage of all those 2 and 3 rank cannon, your 4th slot is a captain (since Zheng doesn't have move and shoot). That's a 36 point shooter with 4 extra actions (the 2 oarsmen, the guy Sensei brings in from the Twilight Zone and the Sensei himself). The GT would be an incredible shooter, but for fewer points you could build a potential 3 or 4 action ship in another faction.

I'd put this in the 'novelty' category, a bit too expensive for the 'go-to' combo box.
