General description:
First off, I'm a total n00b to A&A. Just throwing this out there, so there's going to be a lot of mistakes.
However, I wanted to start off the A&A Miniature Reviews with something iconic...like the Tiger I. But not just ANY Tiger I...the hotly debated Veteran Tiger. Just some backstory on the Tiger, it was one of the best tanks of the war. In my opinion, only the T-34 is better, but even then, just slightly. However, the Tiger beat the T-34 because of its better crew.
Anyway, the Veteran Tiger is a menace to behold. Its 7/6 armor is tough to crack, made even tougher with Superior Armor 2, which means that in order to score a 2nd hit, you have to roll 2 higher than its armor! Even some of the best tanks in the game would balk at those odds! It has 17 attacks, which means that, statistically, you'll get about 8.5 successful rolls. Doesn't sound that good for 65 points? Add in Crack Shot, where you get +1 to all your rolls. This is huge, because you now have a 66% chance of hitting, instead of only 50%. Now, only missing 1 in 3 attacks, you're going to (excuse the poor math) get 11 successes, AT LEAST. This means that you pretty much auto-kill most tanks in the game. Even some of the heaviest tanks in the game couldn't withstand that. If you put two Vet Tigers within 0-1 hexes of eachother, they'd destroy each other. All this, and a little icing: Extended Range 10, so you can attack from 10 hexes away.
Uses:
Without a doubt, the Veteran Tiger is extremely powerful. Use it that way. Don't get overconfident, though, it's not invincible. Nothing is, but with power such as this at your fingertips, it's easy to get carried away. Anyway, use it offensively, but not stupidly. Don't let the opponent flank you.
Strategies and game play:
With out a doubt, the Veteran Tiger is overpowered and undercosted. There, I said it. For 65 points, there's no equal. But enough of me blabbing. As I said above, use the Tiger offensively, but not stupidly. There's no room for that here, where it takes up more than half of your build points. A nice strategy is to make your opponent nervous: they'll make more mistakes, which is always good.
Combos with other miniatures:
There isn't really all that much room for combos with the Veteran Tiger, it's very much a "lone wolf" type, and this is shown with the amount that it costs. However, you should add in some anti-infantry, as this tank is absolutely terrible against infantry. Add in a machine gun team.
Ways to counteract it:
Play a tank like the Soviet IS-2 or some other type of heavy tank. However, while you may counteract it in theory, your tank is probably going to die in the process, so this is not recommended. Or, add in some infantry that do good against tanks-if you're suicidal.
Also, here's an obvious one: Anti-Tank. If I recall correctly, (don't have the rulebook with me) Anti-tank is counted as infantry, so the Tiger doesn't get as many attacks, and Anti-Tank is obviously...anti-tank.
Strengths/Pros:
Hard to kill
Great ability set
Will probably kill whatever kills it, back.
Undercosted
Weaknesses/Cons:
Terrible vs. Infantry
Over half of build cost means that a lucky shot will ruin your day
May not make its points back
Artwork and aesthetics:
I like the look of the Tiger I in general, the miniature does it justice, imo.
Overall rating:
The Veteran Tiger receives a 10/10 from me. It's just WAY too good for what it does. Which is fine, I guess, if you play Germany, but even I probably wouldn't play this piece, unless you're in a highly competitive tournament, OR you don't want to have friends.
There's probably a billion mistakes I made in this review; but please go easy on me!
