Bazana
The Diamond in the Rough

General description:
Hi everyone!
Today, I am to be reviewing Spain's diamond in the rough from RotF. We all know the big hype about the Cristobal; that's why this ship didn't get much attention. The reason this ship is so good, is because of her low point cost. The Cuervo, a similar ship, costs 4 points more. However, it does have an L-range cannon. And it looks cooler. But in my opinion, the Bazana is better. In fact, it's probably the second best ship in the game that can't be hit by L range cannons, the first is the Tiger's Eye.
Of course, the bad thing about this ship is that it invalidates most ships that can't be hit by L range cannons. I mean, why pay 1 more for the Santa Theresa, or 2 more for the Leandro when you can get this?

Uses:
The Bazana is a perfect pest, and is an even better one that the San Leandro. Half of the cannons, or more, on the big gunships are L range-this effectively means that you have made the might Endeavor, HMS Gallows, or the Constitution, fish in a barrel, and even the HMS Grand Temple is pretty much declawed vs. the Bazana.

Strategies and game play:
Use the Bazana offensively. Have it screen your bigger fighting ships. It has fair speed at S+S+S with a helmsman, so you can even go ahead and take a few pot shots at the enemy. If the enemy attacks the Bazana instead of your big fighter, than they'll have a rough time, unless they are the Enterprise, or something like that. Anyway, like I said before, use the Bazana to tangle up your enemies' gunships. For 8 points, there is no equal.

Combos with other miniatures:
There are several combos with the Bazana. Logically, there is going to be Luis Zuan (if he's not already on another ship), and a helmsman. But what else?

Bazana, Fully Loaded
Luis Zuan, 2
Helmsman, 2
Musketeer, 3
(This one can inflict some major damage on an unsuspecting enemy vessel.)

Bazana, Pyromaniac
Luis Zuan, 2
Helmsman, 2
Firepot Specialist, 2
(This is my personal favorite, firepotting enemy ships when they can't even fight back is brutal.)

Bazana, Fighter to the Last
Luis Zuan, 2
Helmsman, 2
Gonzalo Mora, 2
(Gonzalo Mora allows you to choose the eliminated mast. This means that you can choose to eliminate the S-ranged cannons, so that you can effectively prevent reciprocal attacks.)

Ways to counteract it:
Normal ship-killing methods apply.
Don't use ships with L range cannons.
Use ships that have Musketeers/Marines.

Strengths/Pros:
Cheap
Can't be hit by L range cannons
Slightly above average speed

Weaknesses/Cons:
Average cannons, no L range cannons.

Artwork and aesthetics:
While it lacks the Spanish cross that aficionados like me love, it does have this cool little shield on its top sails. Otherwise, it's kind of boring.

Overall rating:
The Bazana receives an 8.5/10 from me. It might not be as fast or have as much cargo as the Tiger's Eye, but then again, who plays the Corsairs?!
(Just kidding, Ziotoo)
It's a good ship, for a great price.

You just HAD to pick the only card from the RotF database that doesn't have an image, didn't you?

Excellent review. I give high marks to any review that effectively point out a set-filler ship. I never would have thought of the Bazana, but now, she is a really good ship.

One counter that you didn't point out would be the Musketeer. I generally have a Musketeer on my 5-masters (for the killing of derelicts), so that would push the Bazana at bay. Too bad Bazana didn't have L-range cannons too. Now that would be deadly.

Great job Vlad. Glad your here for reviews.

Hehe, I did it on purpose. No, not really.
The reason I didn't add in Musketeers (or Marines, for that matter) are because I rarely see them. Oh, bugger.
I'll add that in right now.
But yeah, if she had at least one L range cannon, that would be awesome.
Thanks for the compliments!

Good one Vlad. She is a beaut!

I'd also recommend a Helmsman and Almirante Miranda. She gets the move and shoot, a reroll, and since Miranda is linked to all Spanish Ships, you have 2 cargo spaces leftover to pick up some remaining gold!
