Fortaleza Dorada
Six Flags over Hispaniola

General description:
This is my favorite fort and potentially the mightiest of them all. It costs a full five gold, which can be a large investment, but it provides six cannons and a great ability. The cannons are all rank three, but there are enough of them to do some serious damage simply by quantity. I like the proportion of two L range and four S range, it allows you to attack ships barely within range or to unload using even the far cannons on a distant ship. Spain has a nice variety of forts compared to the other nations. It has a small one (Puerto Blanco) for exploring and this massive citadel for defense.

Uses:
Use this fort to defend your gold on an island from ships with L-Range cannons. This fort is best played early- to mid-game in order to take full advantage of its defensive abilities.

Strategies and game play:
Before building Fortaleza Dorado, check to see what your enemy has for gunships. If he has all or mostly L range cannons, build away! If they have a large gunship with short range cannons, use caution. If that gunship is the HMS Oxford, don't bother building any fort except Paradis de la Mer. Also, use this fort against ships that cannot be hit with L range cannons...this fort has a mix of cannons making it excellent versus any ship. Use it if you have a massive enemy gunship with a canceler threatening your fleet. (HMS Endeavor/Lawrence, Le Superbe/Monsieur Lenoir, etc.) Cancelers work against ships and crew, but as far as I know forts are immune.

Combos with other miniatures:
Use this fort with gold runners. It is usually a stand-alone fortress, so combos aren't really needed. Foul winds is always fun with a fort. Becalmed can be especially good if you manage to dock at the same time as an enemy vessel. Delay them just long enough to build the fort, then WHAM! You can make this essentially your second home island.

Ways to counteract it:
Broadsides is a great way to take this fort down, as are flotillas and other ships with double-range S cannons. (HMS Meresman, it's your time to shine! ) This fort is worth the time and resources to take down usually, because it is likely guarding an island's worth of gold. It isn't unusual to find half the gold in the game in this fort.

Strengths/Pros:
Great defensive ability!
More cannons than any other fort.

Weaknesses/Cons:
Immobile, costs five points, hard to find on the atlas...

Artwork and aesthetics:
My favorite fort for artwork, a nice golden color with six flags! (No roller coasters unfortunately)

Overall rating:
9/10, a great fort, but only in the right circumstances.

Can forts be assigned crew???

One good combo i just thought of: build this fort on the island near your opponent's HI and couple it with a fleet of HI raiders...if you really are chased, your raiders will manage to get repair near this fort!
Also, another good combo is coupling with ships that cannot be shot at while docked to provide extra defense to those useful ships...maybe i'll post such a fleet, sooner or later.

ciao! Fede

No. You can drop off a Marine, who can add a cannon to anywhere on the island, and the fort prevents any enemy ship from docking, but they could eliminate the marine by hitting the island twice with the same shoot action.

You could also park a Titan on the island (which can be assigned crew)... I don't think they could climb on top of the fort, but it would look totally bad-ass if they did.

The 2L cannon on the Coral isn't bad, but the cannons on La Academia might need some help (4L-3L-3L). You might have better luck with "can't be hit by L cannons" ships, and park it close to the shore... this would force your opponent to get within S, which hopefully will be in range of the fort's 3L cannon.
