L'Afrique
you want speed? I'll give you speed

General description:
To most, the bad cannons and sucky ability is not worth the 9 points you must pay for it. But hidden in this lousy ship is the fastest tower in the game.

Uses:
Put a helmsman on it and it tows at a base speed of S+S+L.

Strategies and game play:
When a large wanted warship is derelict use the L'Afrique to tow it with lightning speed.

Combos with other miniatures:
Used with a L'Afrique with a helmsman and the Le Bonaparte. The Le Bonaparte makes for a quick kill and L'Afrique starters the tow.

Ways to counteract it:
Get a fast 1 mast ship(HMS Discovery, Fallen Angel) and go up to it and blow a big hole in its speed.

Strengths/Pros:
Its +L to base speed when it has all of its masts gives it an incredible towing speed.

Weaknesses/Cons:
Once hit its awesome ability is killed and you are back to the old S+S. Plus, it must be defended because its canons are just not good enough.

Artwork and aesthetics:
L'Afrique is a standard 2 mast design with plain white sails and basic gun port.

Overall rating:
I would give this ship an overall rating of a 7/10

Why does it get such a high rating?
Its cannons stink, and if it's hit, then you lose a huge amount of speed. Plus, I can pay 8 points for the Bon Marin with a helmsman.

I remember using this ship in single set games. She was great for Amiral St. Croix since he can give any ship an extra action with a 6 rolled. And she was cheap for the French. But, yeah, I never liked the +L if she has her masts ability. It'll only allow you to get into a fight quickly, but after that, she's served her purpose.

I think it would behoove you to mention why you picked El Freaky off all ships. Is it one you use frequently? Is it one you've sank frequently?

Actually, in a huge 100+ pt three-way deathmatch, this was the very last ship left in my fleet with St. Croix on board. She stayed out of the whole fight, but got smoked by Baochuan, Bonhomme Richard, and Grand Path. It was sick.

It isn't supposed to fight, the warships fight and the L'Afrique is the S+S+L tower!

But the Bon Marin tows at a base speed of S+S not S+S+L.

I play everything frequently. My fleet varies from game to game using a wide range of ships, but when I used L'Afrique the ability really worked great for ship stealing. I was trying to point out a good use for this ship. I don't suggest it replace a warship!

Another use for this ship would be to add an oarsman and play Becalmed. It wouldn't be slowed down at all, but most other ships would either be slowed or stopped. This could be great for home island raiding or for when you do the aforementioned towing. If this ship cost half of what it does, it would be a great ship, but at nine points it is quite overpriced. Instead of towing a ship back, why not throw Claude Perier or another crew like him on the attacking ship. When you derelict the enemy, flip to add the appropriate shipwright.
