HMS London
English do have cheap gunships!

written by algorab Premium Member

General description:
They say English ships are slow and expensive...
But here we have, for the cost of an average 3 mast, a big fighter, guns that hit 266% of the times, and more than respectable cargo space...
Add that S+S speed and I see a good ship at a ridiculous price!

Uses:
Gunship!
Main one in a low points games, and excellent secondary fighter in higher points battles.

Strategies and game play:
I personally use it do backup my Titan...
Or surround it with small runners and use it to keep them out of trouble...
With only 2 crew Mermaids can't do much harm, and the 2 free cargo might still be used if you meet a Pirate treasure hauler...

Combos with other miniatures:
With only 11 points of cost you can't put really expensive crew on... I'd use a named Captain, a crew killer like Thomas Gunn the Younger, or Hermione Gold if you want to bring the gun rate to an impressive 333%!
Once you have added an Helmsman HMS London doesn't need much more help.
With 20 points you got a fearsome, fast gunship, sounds a good bargain to me!
If you put a plain captain the cost goes to 16, and that's really a theft!

Ways to counteract it:
Avoid it (easier said than done, against S+S+S...), or pin it bow-to-bow with a ship immune at S-range (like Prince of Chichester) and destroy it slowly.
Also a Firepot could do wonders...

Strengths/Pros:
Excellent mixed guns
Low cost
Good cargo space
Reasonable speed (for an English at least)

Weaknesses/Cons:
The Special Ability doesn't seem very useful...

Artwork and aesthetics:
I like the clean, bright look of English ships, this one shines as if Her Majesty was about to inspect it...

Overall rating:
8/10, might have been more with another ability.

Nice review.

This is a good example of a hidden gem that not everyone notices.

I find that using powerful 4 masters as my main battle ship in 40 point games allows for a stronger overall fleet than a more expensive 5 master.

Thank you!
That's exactly my point. Why spend so many of your 40 points on an average 5-mast when you can get a first class 4-mast for less?
Ciao, Algorab.

Impressive.

The London is great for its cost.

Another couple Ideas of crew for it:

The Gentleman: Captain ability and reroll. Nuff said.

Thomas Gunn the Younger: Captain and eliminates crew!

First Mate Ismail: In case you want to utilize its ability.

I compliment you on a job well done, algorab, but I feel you should double check your reviews for grammatical and spelling errors. Apart from that, your "voice" conveys your enthusiasm for the game and I like that in a Pirates player/review writer. I look forward to reading more of your reviews in the near future.

Sorry about the spelling Lil! But English is my second language: I'm Italian. I've done my best, believing this was a space to write your ideas in, not an English exam! Anyways, I think it's correct by now.
Apart from that, I'm glad you liked it! The approval of a more experienced player is always welcome on your very first review!
Ciao!

Where are you coming up with your percentages? It is impossible to hit more than 100% of the time, so I find this review to be lacking. Please explain.

The percentages are the standard measure of fire accuracy for Pirates. A 100% means an average of 1 mast removed per turn, 200% two masts removed, and so on. A 333% fire ratio means that every turn you might expect this ship to remove a little more than 3 opponent's masts, that's very accurate for a four master.
