Guichuan

Miniature text:

Ghost Ship. Junk. Treasure Ship.

(Treasure Ship: This ship must begin the game with The Headhunter aboard. A ship's crew does not take up cargo space on this ship, though their combined point cost still may not exceed this ship's point cost. Once per turn, this ship may move S after loading or unloading cargo).

When one of the emperor's treasure ships went off course in a storm, she was presumed to have sunk, her crew and treasure lost at the bottom of the sea. A year and a day later, the ship was seen and hauled, but when Jade Rebellion crew sailed close to her, they quickly noticed her new ghostly form. From then on the ship became known as the Guichuan - ghost ship. This ship of purest evil, commanded by the notorious Headhunter and crewed by mysterious phantoms, now claims allegiance to the Cursed and the sea fiends that animate her.

General description:
The Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde of ships. In a 40 point game it is not very useful. In an 80 point game it might be unstoppable.

Uses:
Gunship, treasure ship, last ship floating, Guichuan can do anything. However, it is probably best suited towards gunship, and it is FAR more effective in larger point games.

Strategies and game play:
In a 40 point game I'd be very tempted to take Hidden Cove and zoom to the middle of a grouping of wild islands. With more points, you take extra action crew and go after enemy ships. With Cursed Headhunter you can steal ALL the treasure on a ship if you win a boarding action, so you can use Guichuan to take out enemy runners-- assuming you have the helmsman, extra action crew etc to CATCH the runner. You can shoot it out with, or ram/board any other ship (Headhunter has the option to eliminate ALL enemy crew if it wins a boarding action-- and how can it lose?!). Keywords like Junk, Fear (from Headhunter) and Ghost ship that would be a major selling point of any other ship are mere sideshows here. Guichaun has so many guns it can engage multiple targets simultaneously.

Combos with other miniatures:
In a 40 point game, there are very few options: Hidden Cove/explorer, or helmsman/explorer or captain. In larger games, Tabitha McWarren, a sac captain, sac fodder, multiple cancellation crew, rerollers, whatever you want.

Ways to counteract it:
The easiest way to counter it is to limit the game to 40 points. In a larger game, it's like Godzilla. Godzilla takes out Tokyo while fighting the entire Japanese army. How did they stop Godzilla? Bring in another monster. In the pirates world, the only thing that can take Guichuan out is another Guichuan or a Baochuan. I leave out things like Mermaids and Becalmed because you have to figure that somebody will take FotG and use it on turn 1. Reefs would definately mess up this ship. Plague, maybe? I think a plague or explosives laden ship would be blown out of the water before it could ram. Firepots and smokepots, but those can be cancelled. I don't think a smaller ship could win a gunfight simply because Guichuan can take more crew and take more damage than any other non 10 master. You could trick out a ship like Enterprise or Titan, but Guichaun can take everything Titan has, plus another 10+ points of crew--AND it lasts twice as long in a fight.

Strengths/Pros:
Sheer bulk, Headhunter, Treasure ship keyword.

Weaknesses/Cons:
Small mammals that eat the eggs? Seriously, it is too expensive for a 40 point game. It is also very slow until you play with more points and it can get multi action crew in play.

Artwork and aesthetics:
The flavor text for the ship says it once was a Jade treasure ship that was lost at sea. This ship certainly looks like it was lost and taken over by the Cursed. Its size dwarfs even the 6 masted Jade junks. It is VERY impressive on a playing field.

Overall rating:
In a 40 point game, 2 of 10. In an 80 or more point game, 10 of 10.

We did a 200 point multi-player game at my venue and I fielded the Guichuan. It got swarmed because everyone wanted to be the one to sink it! It went down but not after I flipped over my Shipwright and lasted two more turns. Bye-bye, Behemoth!

It ocurred to me that the HMS Leicester with a crew that gives it the broadsides attack keyword would be able to derilict and maybe capture it without anything else.

No, it can't be done: Broadsides can't be combined with any other ability.

Personally, I like to use Davy Jones from DJC, along with Loki's Revenge so I can copy the Longship ability, thus making this an even more impressive 20-gun behemoth. Overall, this is a good review, though.

Or just copy HMS Lucy's Luck, and make it almost unbeatable.

While this review is useful, it does have some contradicting factors, such as "zooming" to an island. Its base move is S, so zoom is not a very good choice word in this situation. Also, rather than a helmsman being one of those "if you want to" crew, it is 90% of the time a must have on this ship. This is an average treasure runner, while it does have worst possible speed, it does have an immense cargo space.

3.3/5 review.

Since this has been dragged back to the top...

This review may have been better three and a half years ago when it was first posted, but it doesn't hold up to today's standard.

I like that it was covered from both the 40 and 80+ point angles, but beyond that it's pretty light on useful information. Most of the rest is just generic stuff that could apply to any large ship, and very little is said to distinguish the Guichuan from others, aside from repeatedly mentioning how large it is.

The counteracts section is particularly weak, since many of the things that are mention don't apply or are wrong - Explosives and Plague are virtually useless against a Ghost Ship, Becalmed is meaningless to a ship that will almost certainly carry an Oarsman (and with a base move of S won't slow down at all). Mermaids will work, but there's always FotG (which has not wiped out all events in a very long time).

Most importantly, it is absolutely not necessary to use another large ship to take this one down. There are plenty of "smaller" ships that with the right setups could cause major problems for this one, especially with things like flotillas and the various shot equipment in the mix. Not that you'll even need to fight this thing if you're playing with the standard gold-based rules -- pick off the one or two (tiny) treasure runners that came with this monster and you can simply ignore it the rest of the game because it's too slow to matter.

Yes, and for the 63 points you waste to make even the most bare-bones version of the Loki's Revenge combo or the 59 points for the Lucy's Luck combo, your opponent will be able to put together an entire fleet of ships that will effortlessly clear out the treasure on every single island (except maybe the one closest to you), and then afterwards if you haven't already conceded, will overwhelm this "unstoppable" ship with sheer numbers (and probably a canceller or two as well). Don't count on Lucy or Loki sticking around for long either - once the treasure has been swept up, those ships are as good as gone too.

EDIT: Forgot to add the required cost of The Headhunter into those combos. Now they're even more impractical.

I kind of liked the very practical approach the reviewer took towards this one - it's like, yes 30 points for the ship, then the 7 for The Headhunter, who has to be used on it, and all you've got are 2 points for HC and 1 for an explorer, end of story. Very tight.

Although, I suppose the reviewer could have explored somehow using The Headhunter from PofSCS(the Guichuan doesn't really say which one has to be used ), maybe by getting a 0LR+5 crew from another nation involved, which opens up some sac-action options, or considered how the other The Headhunter's Fear keyword might play a role in things, as it's almost certain there will be ships left within S of the Guichuan at some point in time - some points like those would have added more flavor to the review.
