Miniature Review
Hangman`s Joke: click to enlarge
Hangman's Joke

Miniature text:

If this ship ends her turn in a fog bank, on her next turn she may use her move action to move out of any other fog bank in play.

It is whispered that the Hangman's Joke not only follows the fog, but also has become part of the unnatural mists she inhabits, attacking any foolish enough to enter.

Hangman's Joke
The Sneaky Treasure Runner

General description:
While many have stereotyped the Cursed faction as a fleet of fighting spectres, could it be that in their midst lies one of the most intriguing treasure runners ever to haunt the high seas?

Uses:
Exploit the special ability to beat other, faster ships to those islands full of gold.

Strategies and game play:
The strategy for this ship begins with set up. This ship's special allows it teleport between fog banks. Make sure to place as many fog banks as possible as close as permissible to any and every island you can. Once this is accomplished, you have established your routes. Make sure when choosing home islands to give your opponent one of the islands that does NOT have a fog bank near it. You want all fog banks next to treasure islands. After you have implemeted the set-up portion of the strategy, then begins the fun play that will frustrate your nemesis across the table. Simply sail into a fog bank on your first turn. On your second turn, use it to come out of one of those fog banks you placed near a treasure island during set-up. Fill this ship's 4 cargo hold with booty and sail back into the fog bank. Next turn have scotty beam you back to your home island fog bank to unload your trove of treasure.

Combos with other miniatures:
I know what you are thinking. "What if my opponent places me on an island without a nearby accesible fog bank?" I am way ahead of you. If you have a small, cheap ship in your fleet (lets say La Fureur) you may place a smokepot specialist on that ship. leave him docked at your home port, and whenever the Hangman's Joke wants to come or go, have your smokepot specialist open the fog bank portal. Yes, this does work if you pay close attention to order of operation!

Ways to counteract it:
-Like all treasure runners, this ship will usually lose in a fight against, say, any five-master.
-While this ship can move at warp speed using fog banks, it still can lose in a race to a ship using the lightning speed Hidden Cove event.
-Rolling Fog may move a fog bank a little ways from a treasure island, or it may move it closer. T'is a gamble that might pay off.

Strengths/Pros:
-It is one of only two ships that sensibly can be used primarily as treasure runners for the cursed fleet.
-It has a big enough cargo hold to carry all the treasure on one island.
-It has a special ability that allows it to move fast between islands.
-It is the most unpredictable ship in regards to destination.

Weaknesses/Cons:
-11 points?
-Two masts are always a weakness against the Harbinger, the Blackwatch, the HMS Titan, any ship with a firepot specialist, etc.
-You still have to roll to find out where the Hangman's Joke will leave a fog bank.
-Short base move could mean an extra turn between exiting a fog bank and docking at a treasure island.

Artwork and aesthetics:
I think this ship has some of the best artwork in the game. The hazy grey masts go well with the fog bank theme of this ship.

Overall rating:
Very fun special ability, but still has a big list of cons. 6.5 out of 10

You can't use a Smokepot Specialist in combination with Hangman's Joke's ability. Smokepot Specialists use Fog Banks as a counter but they are not considered the "Fog Bank" terrain. The best way to use Hangman's Joke's ability is to assert your privilege to place a terrain token and use Rolling Fog to put a Fog Bank wherever you want.

I know you disagree with the ruling on smokepot specialists and that you plan to house rule that the Hangman's Joke along with the Mist Walker will be allowed to utilize smokepot specialists.

Love to pair all the fog hoppers up with smokepot-specialists and just fly around grabbing cargo. Works extremely well.
