Subject: The Fleet Challenge Archives! Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 7:10 pm
Miniature Trading has a long, proud and glorious history of Fleet Challenges – forum games and contests where we design Pirates CSG fleets around a scenario. We compete for bragging rights, the opportunity to create the next challenge and sometimes even prizes! All while bringing the forum together and “theoretically” playing the game.
The decentralized structure of the challenges means that some great history is submerged in the depths of the forum. This thread will try and bring past fleet challenges to the surface. It is very cool to look back on.
I also hope to post a How-To guide to help future hosts in creating and writing a Challenge. I think Woelf set forth a clear structure that we should all strive towards keeping!
Note: Some things are still a work in progress. I'll post when there are updates.
Edit by a7xfanben: Between my record keeping of the newer fleet challenges, and volt's digging up of past challenges, we now have a complete archive! There are 58 total challenges listed here.
A History of The Fleet Challenges
"The Old Era" Colringbk created the first Fleet Challenge, which quickly became a tradition and is now a hallmark of this forum.
Challenges in the Old Era: 32 (April 2008 to May 2012)
"The New Era" After two fleet challenges that took a very long time to resolve, we have entered the modern age of fleet challenges, where the length of a fleet challenge averages one or two months. (as opposed to a week+ in the Old Era and sometimes a year in the Middle Era)
Challenges in the New Era: 18 and counting (August 2015 - Present)
(I can make these colorful too, if you'd like to see your name in a certain ink. This IS after all such an important thing to take great pride in and brag about! There are 14 different colors that we can use, though we'll run into a problem someday because not all of them are very practical, like yellow, white and cyan.)
(P.S. It WAS intentional that the "Gimmick" challenge is a flamboyant violet, and that the "Lipstick" challenge is a nice red. )
Thanks for making such good information available for the whole community to access easily. Maybe it should even be stickied, as it would be updated over time and could serve as a guide for newbies who are starting their first challenge.
With that said, there are a few things I want to point out:
1. I know it didn't get as much attention/participation as most challenges because it went out of order, but you forgot about The Cursed Challenge.
After a long drought of Challenges since the discontinuation of the game
I cannot believe that this thread was created in March of 2014, that the last post was in October of 2014... for that matter, when did it become 2016? Honestly, all of this felt like it happened a few months ago.
Wow... <Sigh> I've been horribly out of the forum's picture. It is a regret of mine not only on a personal level, but because it's my official duty, too. Overall, it's one of my biggest regrets of 2015 and, well... my life.
I'll unlock this. It will need some updating. During my absences, I've missed entire fleet challenges...
Old comment: It's been nice to do a lot of challenges in the past 10 months or so - 8 challenges to be exact! (including the current one) Out of curiosity I looked at the different threads for the Draft and Sealed Pack challenges, to see how long they took. The Draft thread was posted on 8/22/2013 and the winner was crowned on 1/21/2014. For the Sealed Pack challenge, the thread was posted 6/28/2014 and it was not until July 2015 that we had a winner. It's safe to say that we've picked up the pace! (Those challenges were also back-to-back, so it took about 2 years to complete those 2 challenges! )

I've updated the post directly above this one. El Cazador has gotten on the leaderboard with his first fleet challenge victory, while Volt has just tied brettb45 for the overall lead with 3 wins apiece! What will happen next??
Another update and I've tied Volt and Brettb45 in the lead with 3 victories apiece in the modern era. El_Cazador pulled off a rare feat, winning 2 out of 3 challenges or effectively 2 in a row due to his hosting the one in between victories (which Brettb45 pulled off recently as well).
It's funny how my wins can be traced to some of my "strengths" if you will. I won the Overthrow of Davy Jones challenge, which at 120 points was one of the largest fleet challenges we've had. I have a long and rich history of playing very large games, so it's fitting that I won one of the bigger challenges. My favorite ship type has always been 5 masters, and I ended up winning the Large Fry fleet challenge, which only permitted 5 masters and up in the build. My latest victory comes in the Battleship fleet challenge, which is fitting because of my interest in naval history, specifically from a warfare perspective and a Royal Navy perspective. My fleet ended up using Cursed sea monsters instead of English warships, but it's nonetheless fitting that I won a more combat-oriented challenge. (And it's ironically not fitting at all since I hate the game Battleship lol)
But enough about me, it'd be nice for someone else to have some "challenge reflections" if you will.
